A matter of a few days after Rory McIlroy closed the 2015 European Tour season with victory in Dubai, the 2016 campaign gets under way at the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek, a 7,287-yard, par 72 course in South Africa. The principal hazard are the trees which line the fairways, although there are numerous small streams which have been diverted through the course to make for strategic play. Several famous names have won this event, including Justin Rose and Adam Scott, with Charl Schwartzel a dominant figure in recent years – he won back-to-back titles here in 2013 and 2014 including one 12-shot margin of victory. The defending champion is Branden Grace, who won by seven strokes last year.

The South African trio of Grace, Schwartzel and last year’s runner-up Louis Oosthuizen dominate the betting and as multiple winners on the European Tour they will be the main attraction, alongside the famous Kruger Park wildlife. Grace, who earned a top five finish in Dubai, is the market leader at best odds of just 9/2 with Paddy Power, with course specialist Schwartzel available at best odds of 13/2 with BetfredPaddy Power and Coral. Oosthuizen is an 8/1 chance with most firms.

David DrysdaleDAVID DRYSDALE is one of a number of interesting outsiders this week, with the Scot arriving in reasonable form after top 20 finishes in Portugal and Hong Kong last month. Drysdale has enjoyed several good results at Leopard Creek, finishing in and around the top 10 on three of his last five visits – he was 11th two years ago and then 6th last time around. Coral are offering a stand-out 100/1.

Jaco Van ZylIf the leading South Africans fail to make an impact then JACO VAN ZYL could be well placed to make a challenge. He hasn’t played here for a couple of years but he was fourth in 2011. He also performed well on the Africa swing in the early part of last season, finishing as runner-up in Joburg and then placing sixth in the Africa Open, while he was second at this month’s Turkish Open too. Bet365 are offering the best odds of 30/1.

Lee SlatteryLEE SLATTERY had little to cheer before the beginning of September, with earnings for the year of €150,000, but he has since won over €600,000 thanks in part to a win in Russia and a runners-up finish in Holland. He was also ninth in a strong field in Turkey this month, before another decent performance last week in Dubai. A one-time runner-up at this venue, he should be backed at best price 55/1 with Bet365.
