Venue

The BMW Championship returns for a second visit to the Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Illinois, the scene of Zach Johnson’s victory in 2013. Designed to mirror the style of Scottish links courses, Conway Farms features undulating fairways, large greens, huge bunkers and deep, punishing rough. At 7,149 yards, the par 71 layout is not among the PGA Tour’s longest, but it can still provide a stiff test if the players are anything other than straight off the tee. The rewards for accuracy are clear, though, with Jim Furyk’s 59 two years ago the obvious example. This is the home course of Luke Donald, but only the top 70 from the FedEx Cup rankings are eligible for this event and the Englishman is 10 places outside the line.

Favourites

With Rory McIlroy still finding his way back to form and fitness and Jordan Spieth spectacularly out of form in the last few weeks, Jason Day is the star attraction. The US PGA champion has replaced Spieth at the top of the FedEx Cup race with an incredible run of results – 9-4-1-12-1-1-12 – and is no bigger than 15/2 with Betfred for a fourth win in six starts. McIlroy is a 9/1 chance with Spieth pushed out to 12s for this event. Henrik Stenson is also at 12/1 while the man who pipped him to the title at last week’s Deutsche Bank Championship, Rickie Fowler, is available at 16/1.

Tips

Jim FurykIt’s been an excellent season for JIM FURYK, the veteran Ryder Cup star who has come on strong since winning the RBC Heritage in April. Having placed in the top five at six of his last 12 tournaments including the recent Deutsche Bank Championship, Furyk will be full of confidence that he can compete at a venue where he shared third place two years ago. The world ranked no. 7 can be backed at odds of 22/1.

Zach JohnsonZACH JOHNSON has been a frustrating selection for us twice recently, failing to deliver when we tipped him at the PGA and Deutsche Bank Championship. However, he has been in fine form before and in between those events, including winning the Open at St Andrews of course, and as the only previous winner of this event at Conway Farms he must be taken very seriously. Sky Bet are offering the best odds of 33/1.

Hunter MahanHUNTER MAHAN spent much of the summer missing – or nearly missing – cuts, but he burst back into life with a top five finish at the Deutsche Bank and he looks a good selection as an each-way outsider at odds of 66/1. Mahan is capable of putting together a sustained run of good results when his putter is hot and it was during his third round of 64 at TPC Boston. He also has good memories of this place, having finished fourth here 2 years ago.
