Venue

For the third successive year, the BMW South African Open takes place at the Glendower Golf Club in the city of Ekurhuleni. At 7,564 yards this par 72 course is fairly long, with four substantial par threes, but with 64 bunkers accuracy off the tee is perhaps even more important than distance. After playing in the 2013 event, Ryder Cup star and captain Paul McGinley described this beautiful parkland course as one of the best he has ever played. The defending champion is Andy Sullivan.

Favourites

With Charl Schwartzel being forced to withdraw because of a stomach upset, fellow South African Branden Grace leads the home challenge at the first of several events co-sanctioned with the Sunshine Tour. With six wins to his name including two in 2015, Grace is one of the leading players on the European Tour and he is a short-priced favourite at just 5/1 with BetfredBetVictor and Stan James – odds which reflect the lack of depth in the field. Sullivan, who defeated Schwartzel in a play-off 12 months ago, is also in single figures at 9/1 with Stan James. It’s wide open beyond those two, with Jaco Van Zyl a 20/1 chance and Gregory Bourdy at 28/1. Other home stars Retief Goosen and Ernie Els are available at odds of 33/1 and 66/1 respectively.

Tips

Gary-StalGARY STAL sprang a huge surprise when he won the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship last January, a week after sharing fifth place on his debut here. The Frenchman struggled for much of the rest of the year but the experience of playing in the Race to Dubai play-offs and holding his own is sure to have boosted the 23-year-old’s confidence and he can challenge once again this week. Betfred are offering best price 40/1 (just 33/1 elsewhere).

Lee SlatteryLEE SLATTERY enjoyed an excellent second half of last year, winning the Russian Open and then finishing as runner-up in Holland just a week later. But he also finished third, just a shot behind Sullivan and Schwartzel in this tournament last season and if he can pick up where he left off in November he can go well again here at a tempting best price of 45/1 with Bet365, with 5 places on offer for each-way bets.

Hennie-OttoAt the age of 39 HENNIE OTTO is no longer the most competitive of players among the South African contingent, but he has shown up well at this event in recent years. He won in 2011 and was ninth a year later, before finishing 2nd and 13th on his two appearances at this venue, while he has recorded 17 top-25 finishes in his last 20 starts on home soil. Certainly at Bet365‘s stand-out odds of 60/1 (40/1 elsewhere) he is an attractive each-way selection this week.
