Lewis Hamilton made it six pole positions from seven races in 2015 as he surged to the front of the pack in qualifying in Canada on Saturday night and the layers have reacted by trimming his odds to 2/7 to win the race and extend his lead at the top of the championship. Team mate Rosberg lines up alongside him and the 4/1 appeals courtesy of the each way value.

The each way pays even money along, and that should probably be shorter than 1/2 for a man who has finished inside the top two in four of the past six races, on a track which plays perfectly to the strengths of the Mercedes power unit.

Ferrari have introduced a new engine for this race and it paid dividends as Kimi Raikkonen qualified 3rd, but he probably shouldn’t be trusted to finish on the podium at just 3/10, while the layers probably have too much faith in Sebastien Vettel to recover from qualifying 15th to finish inside the top 3 (at 7/2) or in the points at 1/7. He should achieve the latter, but the odds don’t appeal.

Instead, those odds open up the opportunity to back Valtteri Bottas at 4/1 to improve from fourth on the grid. The Williams shares the Mercedes engine, and it’s worth noting that six of the top seven have that powerful unit after qualifying – including the Lotus pair of Grosjean and Maldonado, who have enjoyed easily their best weekend thus far.

Bottas was just 1/10th slower than Raikkonen and the circuit should give him chances to pass on the track, without the need for pit stops to work in his favour.

Speaking of the Lotus’, Maldonado appeals at 5/6 to finish in the Top 6 with very little behind him which should threaten their improvement. The market is surely over-rating Vettel (1/3) and Massa (11/4) who both start well back, and that gives this bet a sliver of value.
