After winning their Champions League group for the first time, Man City are rated the Premier League team most likely to progress furthest in the competition.

From a best price of 13/10 with Coral following the completion of the group stage, City are now just 8/11 with Bet365 after the draw for the round of 16 paired them with Dynamo Kiev, with the first leg in Ukraine to be played in an empty stadium.

City, who have never won a knock-out tie in the Champions League or European Cup, have avoided a third successive meeting with Barcelona in the last 16, with the previous two having ended in convincing, but not embarrassing, defeats.

Despite the kind nature of the draw – City will have been fearing a tie against PSG – it’s difficult to have too much confidence in Manuel Pellegrini’s side given their performances in the group stage. Their defence was especially poor, conceding in every game, although they will be hopeful of having Vincent Kompany fit for the next stage after he managed only one full match in the group, while it’s also worth noting that Sergio Aguero played less than 180 minutes across the six games. City lost twice to Juventus and needed last minute winners against Sevilla and Borussia Monchengladbach as they surprisingly pinched top spot. Only in Sevilla and in the second half at home to the German side did they impress.

The shift in City’s price is due to the tough ties handed to Chelsea and Arsenal, with Jose Mourinho’s side facing PSG for the 2nd successive season, having been beaten on away goals last year. Chelsea, like City, topped their group and their performances in Europe have been far more convincing than those in the league.

The 2012 European champions have reached at least the quarter-finals in eight of the last 12 seasons and that greater know-how at this level makes them a more attractive betting prospect than City, in spite of the dire first four months of their Premier League campaign and City’s better draw. Getting through the group could change the course of their season completely.

Chelsea have a manager and players who are experienced in getting through the toughest of two-legged fixtures, something City cannot boast, and at best odds of 6/4 with Bet365 they are the better bet to progress furthest. The 2-1 defeat at Porto was the only alarm in the group stage and they eventually breezed through with successive wins over Dynamo Kiev, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Porto once again.

As for Arsenal, the draw could not have been more unkind, with Barca awaiting in February. They were superb in their 3-0 demolition of Olympiakos to sneak into the top two in their group, but against the best opposition they simply haven’t looked good enough in recent years, as their 5-1 defeat in Munich demonstrated.

Barca, who beat Juventus 3-1 in last year’s final, are 5/2 favourites to lift the trophy again and Arsenal are 7/2 with Ladbrokes to knock them out and 13/2 with Bet365 to go further in the competition than their Premier League rivals.

There’s little evidence from the first four months of the season to suggest that this will be England’s year, with Barca and Bayern head and shoulders above what the Premier League has to offer. The latest outright betting odds reflect this.

City are deemed the most likely English winners, with Ladbrokes offering 14/1, with Chelsea out to 22/1 from 18s with Ladbrokes following the draw. Arsenal, who were 25/1 shots before the draw, are now as big as 40/1 with 888sport.

Atletico Madrid, who face PSV Eindhoven in the last 16, can be backed at the same price as City with BetVictor – and that looks a much wiser investment.
