Cheltenham Festival 2016 Review

Another fantastic Cheltenham Festival for followers of our free horse racing tips, with 7 winners tipped from the 28 races (including only two favourites).

That was two short of our 9 winners last year, but still returned a profit of almost £500 for a stake of just £20 on ALL of our Festival tips throughout the week.

Day 1

The first day started steadily, with 14/1, 14/1 and 7/1 placed selections, and it took until the final race for us to land our first winner of the Festival – with our 14/1 tip Ballyalton winning the Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase. In fact we tipped the first two home, with our 16/1 selection Bouvreuil finishing second:

“There are only a few pounds between all of the runners on official ratings and we like the top weight, BALLYALTON, who will surely prove himself better than his current mark over fences – don’t forget he was second to no less than Faugheen in the Neptune two Festivals ago. He loves good ground and his yard has had six winners in past fortnight.”

TUESDAY RESULTS:

7 RACES, 14 TIPS, 1 WINNER, 4 PLACED

PROFIT/LOSS (TO A £20* LEVEL STAKE ON ALL 14 HORSES): +£82.50

*£10 ew or £20 win – depending on which was advised

Day 2

Wednesday was a glorious day at Cheltenham – not only did Sprinter Sacre reclaim his Champion Chase crown in style, but we banged in three winners at odds of 12/1, 12/1 and then 11/1, along with 16/1, 18/1 and 22/1 placed selections.

Blaklion won the RSA Chase at an SP of 8/1 (tipped by us at 12/1 in the morning):

“With eight going to post, it is also tempting to back something each way and either Vyta Du Roc or BLAKLION could be there or thereabouts at the finish. Slight preference is for the latter, who is suited by a battle and this race is traditionally a tough one for young horses. He should also relish the improvement in the ground.”

In the very next race, the Coral Cup, Diamond King obliged at an SP of 12/1:

“The layers seem to have got the market about right as DIAMOND KING and Politologue both look to have big chances. The former really improved for a step up in trip last time and is enjoying a new lease of life since switching yards.”

(we also tipped the 2nd placed horse in the Coral Cup, Long House Hall, at 16/1).

Finally, our 11/1 tip Any Currency won the Cross Country Chase:

“…a safer bet is another course specialist, ANY CURRENCY, who looks great each way value at a double figure price.”

WEDNESDAY RESULTS:

7 RACES, 17 TIPS, 3 WINNERS, 3 PLACED

PROFIT/LOSS (TO A £20* LEVEL STAKE ON ALL 17 HORSES): +£327.50

*£10 ew or £20 win – depending on which was advised

Day 3

We only tipped one winner on Thursday, although it was our biggest winner of the week as 20/1 selection, Mall Dini, won the Pertemps Network Final:

“The other one to be on is Irish raider, MALL DINI, in the hope that he improves on the ground. He has been running well all season and is a thorough stayer.”

We also had 5/1, 8/1, 16/1 and 25/1 tips placed on Thursday – three finished 2nd!

THURSDAY RESULTS:

7 RACES, 18 TIPS, 1 WINNER, 4 PLACED

PROFIT/LOSS (TO A £20* LEVEL STAKE ON ALL 18 HORSES): +£85

*£10 ew or £20 win – depending on which was advised

Day 4

Friday started with a bang, with our 13/2 tip winning the Triumph at an SP of 9/2:

“The going should certainly suit ex flat performers IVANOVICH GORBATOV and Zubayr and they are vying for favouritism for a race in which the winner tends to come from the head of the market. The former looked a big player for this when winning on his hurdling debut, but flopped last time out. He was decent on the level and has conditions to suit.”

We then tipped the winner of the big race of the week, the Gold Cup, at 11/4:

“…we think the race is between Cue Card and DON COSSACK. The ground has come right for both and there wouldn’t have been much to separate them in the King George had Don Cossack not come down two out. We think the ultimate compensation awaits for the Irish raider and Gordon Elliott’s horse gets the vote.”

The week ended with 3rd and 4th placed tips in the Foxhunter (6/1 & 20/1) and 2nd and 3rd placed tips in the final race, the Grand Annual (12/1 & 11/1).

FRIDAY RESULTS:

7 RACES, 18 TIPS, 2 WINNERS, 4 PLACED

PROFIT/LOSS (TO A £20* LEVEL STAKE ON ALL 18 HORSES): -£21.25

*£10 ew or £20 win – depending on which was advised
