Venue

The PGA Tour departs US shores this week for the CIMB Classic 2017, a co-sanctioned event with the Asian Tour which takes place in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur. At 6,951 yards, it’s not necessary to be a big hitter to tackle the par 72 TPC Kuala Lumpur West Course – instead a system of eight lakes means that no fewer than 11 of the 18 holes play over or alongside water hazards. The four previous editions to be staged here have been won by just two men – Ryan Moore recorded back-to-back victories in 2014 and 2015 before Justin Thomas mounted a successful title defence 12 months ago.

Favourites

With consecutive victories here to his name and five titles in the last 12 months, it’s no surprise that Thomas is the clear market leader on his return to Malaysia, at best odds of just 9/2 with Betfred. Last year’s runner-up Hideki Matsuyama is 9/1 with Bet365, with the in-form Paul Casey a 12/1 chance with the same firm. Beyond the top three in the betting there is a big leap to Xander Schauffele at 25/1 with Bet365.

Tips

SCOTT HEND is a man who thrives in these tropical conditions, with the last nine of his 10 career victories all coming in Asia, and after finishing seventh at this venue last year he is definitely one to follow. He’s missed the cut at his last two events, but he was second in Switzerland last month, losing in a playoff to Matthew Fitzpatrick, and 10th at the Bridgestone Invitational before that. The Australian is an appealing best price of 90/1 with Betfred (80/1 elsewhere).

SCOTT PIERCY has enjoyed his two visits to Kuala Lumpur, finishing in the top 10 each time, and after his top 20 place at the Safeway Open in California last week, the American can make an impact once more here. The three-time PGA Tour winner, who also finished T2 at last year’s US Open at the Oakmont Country Club, carded an opening round of 62 in this event two years ago with 10 birdies – and can be backed at best price 45/1 at Bet365.

Anirban LahiriANIRBAN LAHIRI finished ninth at the BMW Championship on his last outing and the Indian is another who thrives in hot and humid conditions. He has won seven titles on the Asian Tour and was third here in Kuala Lumpur 12 months ago – while his last two victories came in India and Malaysia in 2015. Lahiri, who finished T2 alongside Rickie Fowler at the Memorial Tournament in Ohio earlier this year, is available at a best price of 30/1 with Betfred.
