If there were any doubts that Dustin Johnson was over the back injury that forced him to withdraw from The Masters at the last minute, they were blown away in North Carolina at the weekend – where the world number one put in a stunning performance at the Wells Fargo Championship.
Johnson was on the cut line after a round of 75 in the blustery conditions that briefly held up the tournament on Friday, but he surged through the field with rounds of 67 on Saturday and Sunday to go close to extending his winning sequence to four successive events on the PGA Tour.
From odds of 40/1 on Friday evening he was cut to evens after setting the clubhouse lead – but Brian Harman’s back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 ensured he would have to settle for a share of second place. Nevertheless, he’ll go into this week’s Players Championship full of confidence that he can mount yet another serious challenge.
