Roy Hodgson said that his decision to make Wayne Rooney wait for his chance to break Sir Bobby Charlton’s England goalscoring record, by taking him off before the hour against San Marino, was planned to keep him fresh for this game at Wembley.

In truth, the boost to Wembley ticket sales for what is an otherwise meaningless (to England) game – given they were assured of Euro 2016 qualification by beating San Marino – would have influenced the timing once Rooney had opened the scoring.

So, if all goes to plan, Rooney will score his record-breaking 50th England goal in front of a packed Wembley crowd – and he can be backed at best odds of 6/5 with Bet365 to do so (or 4/1 with Paddy Power to score the first goal of the game).

The Manchester United striker hasn’t scored in his last 10 Premier League games, but by contrast has scored 8 goals in his last 9 games for England – and no doubt his team-mates will be doing everything they can to help him to hit that landmark here.

Of course, this is far from a meaningless game for Switzerland, with the visitors still to secure their own place at Euro 2016 (albeit they are in a very good position to do so with 15 points – 5 ahead of third placed Estonia).

The Swiss can be backed at stand-out odds of 9/2 with Coral, with England the 4/5 favourites (generally) and the draw at 13/5 with Bet365.

Switzerland came from 2-0 down to beat Slovenia 3-2 at the weekend and have now won five successive group games, after losing the first two. They are averaging 2.3 goals per game in Group E and, given the relative motivations of each side, we can see both scoring at stand-out odds of 23/20 with Coral.

For the visitors, Stoke’s Xherdan Shaqiri is 11/1 with Bet365 to score first, but we prefer the 10/1 offered by Paddy Power on Josip Drmic (3 goals in last two games).

Finally, we have been killing Unibet with our Correct Score tips for these Euro 2016 qualifiers, which they have consistently been offering best odds for. Let’s take them on again with some high scoring results – a 2-2 would suit everyone if Rooney was one of the goalscorers and that can be backed at a tempting 24/1 (as short as 16/1 elsewhere), while both 3-2’s look massively over-priced at odds of 45/1 and 90/1.
