Liverpool are odds on favourites ‘to lift the trophy’ at St Jakob-Park, with Bet365 offering best price 8/11, while Sevilla are available at 6/5 with Paddy Power.

The Reds are aiming for their first European trophy for 11 years, while Sevilla have won this competition four times in that period, including the last two years.

Last year they beat Ukranian side Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk 3-2 in Warsaw, while 12 months previously they beat Benfica on penalties (0-0 after extra-time) in Turin.

They also won back-to-back titles in 2006 (4-0 against Middlesbrough) and 2007.

The Spanish club therefore hold the record of most Europa League / UEFA Cup wins, but Liverpool would equal that record if they were to win on Wednesday.

Sevilla dropped to seventh in La Liga this season, 12 points behind Villarreal (who Liverpool knocked out in the semi’s), but that was due to 7 defeats in their last 9 games, as their focus switched to lifting this trophy for the third time in a row.

It would certainly be naive to underestimate a side who have beaten Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus this season – albeit all at home.

However, Liverpool fans will take heart from the fact that Sevilla were the only team in La Liga not to win a single game away from home this season (D9, L10), with just one win on their travels in European competition (D2, L4).

Liverpool drew 50% of their Europa League games this season (two 0-0’s and five 1-1’s) and also drew their final two league games this season 1-1.

Given that nine of Sevilla’s ten league draws this season were either 1-1 or 0-0, we suggest backing 1-1 at 5/1 with Bet365 – who refund losing Correct Score bets on all games that finish 0-0.

Liverpool’s last three major trophies (the 2012 League Cup, 2006 FA Cup and 2005 European Cup) were all won on penalties – and they also lost this season’s League Cup Final to Man City that way. They are 11/1 with BetVictor to win on penalties.

The speedy Kevin Gameiro, who has been linked with a move to Barcelona, has scored seven of his team’s 14 goals in the competition this season – including in each of their last three games – and has also scored 24 La Liga goals this season.

He simply must be backed each-way at 11/2 with Bet365 to score the first goal.

For Liverpool, Philippe Coutinho, scorer against both Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund in previous rounds, appeals at a stand-out 17/2 with Bet365.
