The PGA Tour remains in California this week for the Farmers Insurance Open 2017, which is played over both the North and South Courses at the Torrey Pines club in La Jolla. Both courses are par 72 but they differ sharply in length, the South Course measuring a whopping 7,698 yards, almost 650 yards more than the North. With 3 rounds played over the South Course, distance off the tee is key. This tournament, formerly known as the Buick Invitational, has been dominated by 7-time champion Tiger Woods, but it was won for the second time last year by Brandt Snedeker, who succeeded Jason Day as champion. Bubba Watson is another former winner, while Phil Mickelson has won it three times, but not since 2001.

Fresh from a fine performance on his debut outing at the Abu Dhabi Championship – where he missed out by one shot – Dustin Johnson is the market leader at odds of 9/1 (generally), just ahead of 2015 champion Day at 10/1 with Sky Bet, who offer six places for each-way bets. Hideki Matsuyama will be looking to continue his blistering form this week – and the Japanese star is 14/1 with Bet365, with the rest of the field priced at 28/1 and above, starting with Snedeker, Brooks Koepka and Jimmy Walker. Woods, meanwhile, is at 40/1 with BetVictor as he bids for his eighth title at La Jolla.

Charles HowellCHARLES HOWELL III was one of our tips for this event last year and went on to finish 16th, with a final round of 75 proving costly, but we’ll be sticking with him this year given his fine start to the 2017 season. Howell, who has been in the top 10 here in two of the last four years, has finished between 15th and 7th on each of his last 5 starts. He was 12th at the CareerBuilder Challenge last week and he’s a combined 70 under par for his last 20 rounds.

Martin-LairdLike Howell, MARTIN LAIRD has made a decent start to the season and he has been there or thereabouts at this venue in recent years. The 34-year-old Scot has recorded results of 8-27-13-9 on his 4 PGA Tour starts since October, finishing just six shots off the pace at the CareerBuilder Challenge on Sunday. He was 8th at the Farmers 12 months ago and 7th a year earlier, so he should be pretty confident as he returns for another crack. Get 60/1 with BetVictor or Betfred.

BYEONG HUN ANBYEONG-HUN AN switches tours this week, bidding to maintain a run of good results that has seen him finish 10-13-13 on his last 3 European Tour appearances – including a creditable performance in Abu Dhabi last week. The South Korean has already made his mark on the PGA Tour, losing in a play-off at last summer’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans, and he also generates plenty of distance off the tee. Stan James quote best odds of 66/1 and pay 6 places.
