David Haye’s achilles injury may have been a massive boost to Tony Bellew in their fight at the O2 Arena on Saturday, but it was a kick in the teeth for the bookies who paid out some handsome sums on the shock win.
Haye was a 2/9 shot before the start of the bout and he looked certain to justify those odds by the midway stage after taking a big lead on the judges’ scorecards.
Then came the injury that left him all but immobile and so allowed Bellew, stepping up from cruiserweight for this fight, to assume control – and eventually land best odds of 6/1 for his backers with an 11th round TKO.
Haye will feel that only the injury came between him and victory and a rematch would appear likely. Ladbrokes are offering 2/5 that Haye beats Bellew in a bout before the end of the year, with Bellew this time priced much shorter at 2/1.
