Venue

The Italian Open 2017 takes place at the Golf Club Milano in Monza for a third time, having been won by Francesco Molinari last year and by Rikard Karlberg 12 months earlier. With largely flat terrain and no water hazards this parkland course, which measures 7,156 yards and plays to a par of 71, relies on narrow fairways lined by mature trees for protection. Molinari won with a total of 22-under-par, beating Danny Willett by a single stroke, while in 2015 no fewer than nine players were separated by one shot at the top of the leaderboard, with Karlberg defeating Martin Kaymer in a play-off.

Favourites

Jon Rahm is one of the star attractions and this week’s field and the Spaniard is the firm favourite at best odds of 13/2 with Paddy Power, who are offering 7 places for each-way bets, with every other player in double digits. Masters champion Sergio Garcia and last year’s winner Molinari are 16/1 with Bet365 and Unibet respectively, while Paddy Power go 18/1 about Tyrrell Hatton after his victory at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Tommy Fleetwood, Matthew Fitzpatrick and Alex Noren add to a high quality line-up at the top of the market.

Tips

MATTHEW FITZPATRICK has enjoyed a fine month, winning the Omega European Masters in Switzerland and then finishing 11th and 15th on his last two outings. Already a four-time European Tour winner despite having just turned 23, the Sheffield youngster should be backed to continue his purple patch here, where he shared third place in 2015. Paddy Power are offering the best odds of 22/1, with those seven places for each-way bets.

RIKARD KARLBERG hasn’t enjoyed his last two appearances, missing the cut at both, but he has to be worth following at a big price on a course he clearly enjoys – he was the winner of this event two years ago and finished 12th last year. He was 20th at the European Masters last month, so his recent form isn’t all bad – and the Swede is surely worthy of an each-way punt at stand-out odds of 150/1 with Bet365 (100/1 in places).

NACHO ELVIRA missed the cut in Scotland at the weekend but it’s hard to ignore the good run of form he was on before that – finishing in the top 20 at five of his six previous events. The Spaniard came close to his first European Tour title last year, losing in a play-off in the Hassan II Golf Trophy in Morocco, and he also finished third here last year – so he looks a good each-way chance at a top price of 90/1 with both Bet365 and Unibet.
