Venue

The Maybank Championship Malaysia is the first brand new event of 2016 and will be staged over the Old Course at Royal Selangor Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur. The par 71 layout measures 7,079 yards and features numerous tight driving holes and some testing water hazards. The par 3 fourth hole is a short iron shot over water, while the 17th, known as the Volcano, is similar except for the fact that the small green is elevated and surrounded by bunkers.

Favourites

After his recent victory at the Dubai Desert Classic, Danny Willett is the market leader for this new event at a best price of 11/1 with BetVictor. The in-form Joost Luiten is available at 18/1 with Betfred while Louis Oosthuizen is at the same price with Bet365 and Coral. Also at 18/1 with several firms is Martin Kaymer, the winner of two majors and nine other European Tour titles. Rafa Cabrera-Bello, Matthew Fitzpatrick and Thorbjorn Olesen have all made an impression in recent months and are also among the leading contenders.

Tips

Soren KjeldsenSOREN KJELDSEN is one of the straightest drivers around and should enjoy this testing layout, particulalry given the fact that he has been playing consistently well for some time. The Dane, who won last year’s Irish Open, remains in the hunt for a Ryder Cup place and was eighth last time out in Dubai, to follow a top 20 in Qatar. He has made the cut at each of his last 12 events. Bet365 make him a 35/1 chance.

Andrew-JohnstonANDREW JOHNSTON had a tough time on the tour last summer with a succession of missed cuts, but a top 10 finish at the Turkish Airlines Open in November appears to have revived his flagging confidence. He played really well at the recent Qatar Masters, where he claimed a top five finish, and he is driving the ball straight and true so far this season. He’s an interesting long shot at 90s with Bet365 and Betfred (as short as 66/1 elsewhere).

Alejandro-CanizaresIt’s been a good season so far for ALEJANDRO CANIZARES and with a driving accuracy of over 70 per cent he has been one of the strongest players off the tee so far. Top 10 finishes in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai mean he comes to Kuala Lumpur with his confidence up and with his game in much better shape than last summer when he endured a difficult time on the European swing. BetVictor and Paddy Power are offering best price 50/1.
