Monday Horse Racing Tips

Flemenstar did us a massive favour at Leopardstown yesterday, proving nothing is certain in racing, even when you have a small field and a red hot favourite.

Lexus Chase

There is a similar makeup to the Lexus Chase today and, with very few betting opportunities around, we are going to suggest rolling the dice again and backing the two outsiders in the hope of another shock.

FIRST LIEUTENANT has often been a bridesmaid down the years, and his catalogue of top class efforts in big races seemed to have caught up with him recently, but he ran well for a long way in our Hennessy and, with Mouse Morris’ team in good form, he should run his race again today.

That might be good enough to sneak a place, with plenty of doubts over the likes of Foxrock and Carlingford Lough. He’ll need Don Poli or Sir Des Champs to under perform too, but that’s not impossible. Don Poli will be significantly inconvenienced if there is no early pace, whilst Sir Des Champs has to overcome the bounce factor.

As a result, last year’s runner up – ON HIS OWN – is also worth an interest. He’s been totally out of form recently, but may enjoy returning to regular fences after flirting with the cross country obstacles, and his handler, Willie Mullins, reports him to be in good form at home.

Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle

Of course, On His Own nearly claimed the Gold Cup in 2014 when 6 horses virtually jumped the last together and another of that sextet, LYREEN LEGEND, is in action over hurdles earlier on the card in the day’s best betting heat, a Pertemps Qualifier.

Lyreen Legend’s form hasn’t reached anything like the same heights since that heady day in March, but his rating is so much lower over hurdles that he must be a threat here, despite shouldering top weight. He loves heavy ground and ran okay on his comeback recently.

The other one to be on is the maiden, WOODFORD ISLAND, who looks to have been crying out for this longer trip. If he handles the ground, he could prove to be ahead of the handicapper
