Venue

The Gary Player Golf Course at Sun City provides a variety of challenges, with some holes demanding careful plotting and others brute strength – the signature 9th hole is a whopper at 596 yards and features an island green, others have blind tee shots or second shots and the par five 14th is another monster at a touch over 600 yards long. At an overall 7,831 yards driving distance it obviously favours the big hitters – Ernie Els has won this tournament three times and Lee Westwood twice, while other winners include Henrik Stenson, Martin Kaymer, Thomas Bjorn and Danny Willett. Last year’s winner was Marc Leishman, although he doesn’t return to defend.

Favourites

Last year’s field of 30 has been expanded to 72 to include the top 64 players in the Race to Dubai, previous winners and some invitations, and the betting is headed by Stenson, who won here in 2008 before the event was sanctioned by the European Tour. The Swede, who has no difficulty with the length of this layout, was also the runner-up last year and fourth on his previous visit in 2013 and he is no bigger than 9/2 with Sky Bet and Coral. Alex Noren has been the Tour’s form player over the last few months and is the 20/1 second favourite at Ladbrokes and Stan James, ahead of Charl Schwartzel, Kaymer and Ross Fisher, who can all be backed at odds of 22/1.

Tips

CHARL SCHWARTZELCHARL SCHWARTZEL has an outstanding record in his native South Africa, with eight European Tour titles on home soil including two in the early part of this season, and he also finished sixth in this event 3 years ago. The 32-year-old drives the ball a long way, averaging 300 yards off the tee, and although he has been a little wayward this season he is still in the top 20 for Greens in Regulation. If he can ally his strong play from tee to green with some accurate putting, he has the nerve to get the job done. Bet365 are offering 22/1.

george_coetzeeA second round of 73 at last week’s Turkish Airlines Open ruined GEORGE GOETZEE‘s chances of victory, but he played well over the weekend to secure fifth place – a timely return to form ahead of the last two events of the year. The big-hitting South African had a poor summer, but he’s a proven winner with three victories to his credit on the European Tour over the last three years. Two of those came in his homeland and after impressing in Turkey he will be confident of playing well again on home soil. You can get best odds of 66/1 with Paddy Power, who are offering 6 places for each-way bets on this week’s tournament.
