New Year Specials 2016

Several bookmakers have released New Year Special markets, including them taking bets on what will happen first in 2016:

BetVictor > Sports > Entertainment > What will happen first 2016

JanuaryAndy Murray wins Australian Open5/1£25 free
FebruaryCarolina Panthers win Super Bowl 509/2£25 free
MarchDon Poli or Don Cossack wins Cheltenham Gold Cup11/4£25 free
AprilRory McIlroy wins Masters14/1£25 free
MayLewis Hamilton wins Monaco GP10/3£25 free
JuneA Home Nations (inc ROI) wins Euro 201628/1£25 free
JulyMichael van Gerwen wins BetVictor World Matchplay9/1£25 free
AugustThe 2016/17 football season starts10/3£25 free

Andy Murray to win the Australian Open in January is the first thing that can happen. He was the losing finalist in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2015, but with the Scot potentially having to withdraw because wife Kim is due to give birth, it would be a risky choice.

Second favourites Carolina Panthers to win the Super Bowl at 9/2 is the next option, which is better than odds of 4/1 in the Super Bowl market.

The shortest price in the market is 11/4 on ‘a Don’ (Poli or Cossack) to win the Gold Cup at Cheltenham in March, a race for which Djakadam is the current 4/1 favourite.

If you don’t fancy any of those, then why not take the 14/1 on Rory McIlroy to win the Masters in April? That’s a current best price of 7/1.

Ladbrokes > Sports > TV & Specials > First to happen in 2016?

MarchEngland win the Six Nations Grand Slam9/2£50 free
April (9th)A Female Jockey wins the Grand National12/1£50 free
April (10th)Rory McIlroy wins the US Masters9/1£50 free
MayA Championship Team wins the FA Cup12/1£50 free
July (10th)Andy Murray wins Wimbledon7/1£50 free
July (10th)England win Euro 201620/1£50 free
July (17th)Jordan Spieth wins The Open16/1£50 free
AugustJessica Ennis Hill wins Olympic Heptathlon4/1£50 free
SeptemberEurope win The Ryder Cup8/1£50 free
DecemberChristmas Day to fall on a Sunday4/1£50 free

Ladbrokes have a similar market, beginning with an England Grand Slam in the Six Nations at 9/2 – something they last achieved back in 2003.

Next up is a female jockey to win the Grand National on Saturday 9th April at 12/1.

Katie Walsh came closest in 2012, finishing in third on Seabass, but it’s worth noting that 2015 was something of a breakthrough year for female jockeys – with winners of the Irish Grand National (Katie Walsh) and Melbourne Cup (Michelle Payne), plus the first woman to ride the winner of a Grade One jumps race in Britain (Lizzie Kelly).

However, that is something to cheer against at Aintree – if you prefer to back Rory McIlroy at 9/1 to win the US Masters at Augusta, which concludes the following day.

If the market outcome is still pending in July, there could be another sweat for those who back England to win Euro 2016 first at 20/1 – if they have reached the final and Andy Murray also makes it to the Wimbledon final, which takes place hours earlier.
