Several bookmakers have released New Year Special markets, including them taking bets on what will happen first in 2016:
BetVictor > Sports > Entertainment > What will happen first 2016
|January||Andy Murray wins Australian Open||5/1||£25 free|
|February||Carolina Panthers win Super Bowl 50||9/2||£25 free|
|March||Don Poli or Don Cossack wins Cheltenham Gold Cup||11/4||£25 free|
|April||Rory McIlroy wins Masters||14/1||£25 free|
|May||Lewis Hamilton wins Monaco GP||10/3||£25 free|
|June||A Home Nations (inc ROI) wins Euro 2016||28/1||£25 free|
|July||Michael van Gerwen wins BetVictor World Matchplay||9/1||£25 free|
|August||The 2016/17 football season starts||10/3||£25 free|
Andy Murray to win the Australian Open in January is the first thing that can happen. He was the losing finalist in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2015, but with the Scot potentially having to withdraw because wife Kim is due to give birth, it would be a risky choice.
Second favourites Carolina Panthers to win the Super Bowl at 9/2 is the next option, which is better than odds of 4/1 in the Super Bowl market.
The shortest price in the market is 11/4 on ‘a Don’ (Poli or Cossack) to win the Gold Cup at Cheltenham in March, a race for which Djakadam is the current 4/1 favourite.
If you don’t fancy any of those, then why not take the 14/1 on Rory McIlroy to win the Masters in April? That’s a current best price of 7/1.
Ladbrokes > Sports > TV & Specials > First to happen in 2016?
|March||England win the Six Nations Grand Slam||9/2||£50 free|
|April (9th)||A Female Jockey wins the Grand National||12/1||£50 free|
|April (10th)||Rory McIlroy wins the US Masters||9/1||£50 free|
|May||A Championship Team wins the FA Cup||12/1||£50 free|
|July (10th)||Andy Murray wins Wimbledon||7/1||£50 free|
|July (10th)||England win Euro 2016||20/1||£50 free|
|July (17th)||Jordan Spieth wins The Open||16/1||£50 free|
|August||Jessica Ennis Hill wins Olympic Heptathlon||4/1||£50 free|
|September||Europe win The Ryder Cup||8/1||£50 free|
|December||Christmas Day to fall on a Sunday||4/1||£50 free|
Ladbrokes have a similar market, beginning with an England Grand Slam in the Six Nations at 9/2 – something they last achieved back in 2003.
Next up is a female jockey to win the Grand National on Saturday 9th April at 12/1.
Katie Walsh came closest in 2012, finishing in third on Seabass, but it’s worth noting that 2015 was something of a breakthrough year for female jockeys – with winners of the Irish Grand National (Katie Walsh) and Melbourne Cup (Michelle Payne), plus the first woman to ride the winner of a Grade One jumps race in Britain (Lizzie Kelly).
However, that is something to cheer against at Aintree – if you prefer to back Rory McIlroy at 9/1 to win the US Masters at Augusta, which concludes the following day.
If the market outcome is still pending in July, there could be another sweat for those who back England to win Euro 2016 first at 20/1 – if they have reached the final and Andy Murray also makes it to the Wimbledon final, which takes place hours earlier.
