Women’s tennis has a new star after Jelena Ostapenko became the first unseeded player to win the French Open in the open era – stunning Simona Halep with a remarkable fightback in Saturday’s final. Ostapenko, who was a 150/1 shot at Sky Bet before the tournament began, was at 25/1 with Bet365 when she was a set and 3-0 down to her Romanian opponent.
However, her aggressive, attacking style suddenly clicked and she won four successive games before going on to close out an unlikely victory. In doing so she became the first player to win her first career title at a major since Gustavo Kuerten won on the Paris clay in 1997 – on the day she was born. Until a month ago the Latvian was 100/1 to win at Wimbledon next month, but the 2014 Junior Wimbledon champion is now no bigger than 16/1 at Paddy Power.
