Venue

There’s more Links golf on the menu for European golf fans this week as the inaugural Paul Lawrie Match Play takes place at the Murcar Links Golf Club in Aberdeen. It’s a short par 71 layout, but the narrow fairways and slick greens will provide a stern test for a competitive field, packed with names from just outside the top 10 on the Race to Dubai.

Favourites

Marc Warren’s top five finish at the Scottish Open at Gullane has boosted his standing and the Scot is the market leader for this new event at general best odds of 20/1, although the field is wide open. Richie Ramsay is next up at 22/1 while Chris Wood, Tyrrell Hatton and David Howell maintain the British feel at the top of the market at 25s. Raphael Jacquelin and Max Kieffer are among the favourites from the rest of the continent, both at best odds of 33/1.

Tips

TYRRELL HATTONTYRRELL HATTON is now lurking just outside the top 100 in golf’s world rankings and impressed at the Irish and Scottish Opens earlier this summer. His third place finish at last week’s Omega European Masters in Switzerland shows he is in good shape as he heads back to Scotland – his final round of 62 was not bettered all week. Paddy Power and William Hill both offer best odds of 25/1 on him winning his first European Tour title.

Thomas AikenWith accuracy off the tee of great importance this week, take a look at THOMAS AIKEN, who is near the top of the Tour stats. His solid driving is one major factor in his consistent season, which has seen him miss only two cuts. If he can keep out of trouble he has a good chance in Match Play and the South African, who last month finished tied 25th in the US Open on a Links-style course, is an interesting price of 50/1 with BetVictor and Ladbrokes.

Max-KiefferMAX KIEFFER has made the cut at every single European Tour tournament he has played this year and that level of consistency should make him a contender this week. His driving has been solid and he showed a liking for Links golf with a top 10 finish at the Irish Open, where he broke the Royal County Down course record with a 6-under-par 65. BetVictorLadbrokes and Coral are all offering a tempting 33/1 on the German winning here.
