Venue

This tournament was formerly known as the AT&T National and used to be played at Congressional, but will be staged at the stunning Robert Trent Jones Golf Club for the first time this week. The course is built next to Lake Manassas in Gainesville, Virginia, and water is a distinct feature on the par three fourth and 11th holes, which both require a carry over the lake into tight greens. Large, well placed bunkers protect the fairways and the greens on most holes, with the lake forming a beautiful backdrop. Accuracy is important here, but at 7,425 yards this course is lengthy too. One of five Invitational events on the schedule, this event has a reduced field of 120.

Favourites

Defending champion Justin Rose is the market leader with most firms at best odds of 9/1 with BetVictor and Betfred, although he shares the honour with the in-form Rickie Fowler in places. Rose won this title at Congressional last year, so that success should have little bearing on his chances this time around, even if the courses were designed by the same man. Fowler, who won both The Players Championship and Scottish Open recently, is 8/1 in places but 11s with Betfred and Stan James. Jimmy Walker is an 18/1 chance with BetVictor and Betfred, with the rest of the field available at 33/1 or above. Tiger Woods is a 55/1 shot with Stan James.

Tips

Will WilcoxWILL WILCOX may not be a familiar name, but he is starting to make an impact on the PGA Tour, with top 25 finishes at four of his last six events. He was eighth at the John Deere Classic two weeks ago before finishing 2nd at the Barbasol Championship and he is a combined 32 under par for his last eight rounds. BetVictor think he can keep the momentum going this week and offer just 33/1, but he is available at a stand-out 60/1 with Coral.

Johnson WagnerJOHNSON WAGNER is another of the PGA Tour lesser known players, but like Wilcox he is enjoying a little purple patch. He has blown away the memory of five successive missed cuts with results that read T32-T5-T10-T18, during which time he put together 14 consecutive sub-70 rounds. He was a winner on Tour in 2011 and 2012 so he does have what it takes to get the job done, and he can be backed at a good each-way price of 66/1 with BetVictor.

ANDRES ROMEROWith no previous course form to go on we have to rely on a good recent record and that brings us to ANDRES ROMERO, who has been revitalised since a surprise share of 14th place at the US Open – his previous results in the first half of the season had been really poor. The Argentine has finished T6-T10-T34 in his last three events and has been well under par in all three. Although it doesn’t count for much, he also placed in the top five at this event last year. Sky Bet offer just 50/1, but BetVictor are offering 100/1.
