Venue

The Canadian Open returns to the Glen Abbey Golf Course in Oakville, Ontario for the second time in three years having also hosted the event in both 2008 and 2009. Glen Abbey is the home of the Royal Canadian Golf Association and has hosted the national tournament more than any other course – this will be the 26th time. The par 72, 7,273-yard layout is notable for a run of holes on the back nine which play around Sixteen Mile Creek – the first of these being the 11th where the players tee off from a cliff, over the creek and down to the valley floor 60 feet below. Tim Clark is the defending champion, but Brandt Snedeker was the last winner here in 2013. Last year’s runner-up Jim Furyk won back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007.

Favourites

Jason Day was once again close to a major title as he finished within one shot of the leaders at the Open and the Australian is the favourite in Ontario at best odds of 9/1 with Bet365 and Sky Bet. Tournament specialist Furyk is the 16/1 second favourite with Bubba Watson and Matt Kuchar not far behind. Luke Donald, Brooks Koepka and home favourite Graham DeLaet are also among the market leaders. Last year’s winner Clark is an 125/1 shot with BetVictor and Coral, but Snedeker has been forced to withdraw because of a hip injury.

Tips

Matt Kuchar MATT KUCHER is not having a good season by his own high standards but still has a remarkable knack of making the cut, with 17 in 18 appearances on the PGA Tour this year. He was 12th at the US Open last month as he showed signs of getting back to his best but, more importantly, he was runner-up the last time this event was played here at Glen Abbey. Coral are offering stand-out odds of 20/1 (as short as 14/1 elsewhere).

Brooks KoepkaBROOKS KOEPKA maintained his good form with a strong performance at St Andrews, where he finished in a share of 10th place – he didn’t make a single bogey in his last two rounds at the Old Course. That added to his top 20 finish at the US Open and a win at the Phoenix Open in January. Currently 18th in the FedEx Cup standings, he is among the better players in this week’s field and is a 20/1 chance in places, but BetVictor are offering 28/1.

Tony FinauRookie TONY FINAU was on a run of seven successive top 25 finishes before missing the cut at the John Deere Classic but the 25-year-old can get back on track this week as he aim for a maiden PGA Tour win. Finau has recorded four top 10s on the tour this season including two in June and also finished a very creditable tied 14th at the US Open last month – he should be a shorter price than the 50/1 on offer from Ladbrokes.
