The Republic of Ireland need a win to qualify for the Last 16 at Euro 2016 and will be grateful that Italy have already reached the knock-out stages after two wins.

Guaranteed top spot in Group E, Antonio Conte is set to field an under-strength side in Lille on Wednesday, and that has to give the Irish the chance of an upset.

Of course, Italy are still favourites with the bookies, at odds of 7/5 generally, while Martin O’Neill’s men are available at 12/5 and the draw 9/4, both with Ladbrokes.

Following a 1-1 draw with Sweden, Ireland were swept aside 3-0 by Belgium on Saturday in Bordeaux, where they failed to muster a single shot on target.

O’Neill has employed largely negative tactics thus far and the Republic did keep a clean sheet in the first half of both their games in Group E.

Meanwhile, two of Italy’s three goals in France have come in the last two minutes and a 0-0 half-time scoreline here looks worth backing at 11/8 with Paddy Power.

If the Irish are to qualify, then a 1-0 win is the most likely result – Ireland have never scored more than one goal in a game at the Euro Final’s and scored exactly one goal in each of their four qualifying games against Germany and Poland.

That’s 7/1 with Bet365 who refund losing Correct Score on all games that end 0-0.

We suggest backing that, plus 1-0 and 2-0 Italy wins at 11/2 and 10/1 respectively (Italy have never scored more than two goals in their 35 games at the Euro’s).

Shane Long could be Ireland’s hero again – the Southampton striker, linked with a move to the likes of Liverpool and Spurs, scored Ireland’s winner against Germany in their famous 1-0 victory in October and is 13/2 with Paddy Power to score first.
