Royal Ascot 2016 – Thursday Tips

A 9/1 winner, plus 7/1, 20/1 and 28/1 placed tips yesterday at Royal Ascot 2016.

There looks set to be no let-up in the soft ground for day three, the feature of which is the Gold Cup.

Norfolk Stakes     CH4

The underfoot conditions are a major imponderable for two year olds in particular, so the Norfolk Stakes that kicks off the card is a tricky puzzle to solve.

In the hope that his class will see him through, SILVER LINE looks the best bet. He was an easy winner for Godolphin on debut and he has reportedly been working well since.

At a bigger price, LEGENDARY LUNCH looks the best back-up following his win over 6f at Epsom’s Derby meeting recently. He only just held on over that longer trip, so a drop back to 5f should suit. He has winning form with cut in the ground.

Tercentenary Stakes     CH4

Godolphin have a big chance in the next too, courtesy of PRIZE MONEY. He was only just beaten by Algometer in the Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood last time out and that horse ran well in the Derby. He was collared late on so shouldn’t be inconvenienced by stepping back in trip and he seems to handle the ground.

Abdon is the chief threat amongst the market leaders, whilst lightly raced pair Mulk and ROYAL ARTILLERY look the pick of the outsiders. Either could be a threat if handling conditions and slight preference is for Royal Artillery, who ran green last time and may benefit from today’s cheekpieces.

Ribblesdale Stakes     CH4

The Ribblesdale will be a real stamina test for the fillies at 3.40. Few trainers handle the fairer sex better than Ralph Beckett and we would suggest backing both of his runners here.

CHICADORO has form on soft ground and plenty of stamina in her breeding. She looks the stable’s number one on jockey bookings.

ROCAVERDE looks over-priced, however, as she improved significantly to beat Shall We on her seasonal re-appearance. Again, her breeding points to her staying the trip okay.

Gold Cup In Honour Of The Queen’s 90th Birthday     CH4

If the threatened thunderstorms hit Ascot before the Gold Cup the day’s big race could turn into a real slog and an upset is possible.

CLEVER COOKIE will certainly handle the ground come what may and he has looked to be back to his very best this season. He won nicely last time out despite unsuitably fast ground and was only just touched off by MIZZOU in the Sagaro Stakes prior to that.

Mizzou actually looks to be his main rival. He has clearly been trained for this and ran better than his finishing position might suggest when seventh in the race last year. The way that renewal was run meant it probably wasn’t a stiff enough test for Luca Cumani’s runner, but that won’t be the case today given the ground.

With Sky Bet paying out on 5 places, there is a chance an outsider could make the frame and the one we like is SUEGIOO. He stays all day and while he usually falls just short at this level, very soft ground could bring him into the equation.

Britannia Stakes     CH4

Our shortlist for the Brittania Stakes is longer than the straight mile over which it is being run!

Abe Lincoln, Mustashry and Fighting Temeraire all have solid claims, but may be inconvenienced by the ground.

Defrocked is talented, but quirky and his stablemate Monteverdi would be a threat if he stays the trip.

In the end, given the ground could be close to heavy by off time, we have plumped for OUT AND ABOUT, SPEED COMPANY and MIKAMK.

Garcia is another danger, but the handicapper may have his mark now.

King George V Stakes     CH4

In the King George V Stakes that concludes the card we like SHRAAOH and PRIMITIVO each way.
