Having had three horses beaten by a head or less at Longchamp on Sunday we are hoping for more luck today and there is plenty of top class action to get stuck into.
The Dewhurst and the Cesarewitch dominate Newmarket’s card, with the former featuring a showdown between two top class juveniles, Air Force Blue and EMOTIONLESS. The former’s extra experience will count for plenty, but we were really taken with Emotionless’ win at Doncaster last time out and we think he can prove himself a potential superstar by winning here.
|Emotionless (win)||3.10 Newmarket||6/4||Generally|
The Cesarewitch follows and plenty of the horses that were on our shortlist are drawn high, which can be a major disadvantage despite the length of the race.
On that basis, and even though he has to shoulder top weight, we think ORIENTAL FOX is the one to be on. As his handicap mark would suggest, this horse has a bit of class and he will certainly stay the trip. The ground is ideal too and one thing we know is that Mark Johnston’s horses are as tough as teak.
The Irish have a really strong hand with big jumps trainers Tony Martin, Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott all represented. The pick of their runners could prove to be HEARTBREAK CITY for Martin, who also has a favourable stalls’ berth. He was mightily impressive when winning at York last time out and the step up in trip that day seemed to bring about some real improvement. A repeat performance here would see him bang in the mix.
Finally, if there is to be a shock perhaps NORAB could provide it. He is having his first start for a new trainer today and this lightly raced sort could well be suited by the marathon trip. This is a race Terry Warner loves to target and he wouldn’t have invested in this horse if he thought it didn’t have a chance of being competitive.
All bookmakers are paying five places for each-way bets on the Cesarewitch.
|Oriental Fox (ew)||3.50 Newmarket||20/1||Bet365, Betfred|
|Heartbreak City (ew)||3.50 Newmarket||8/1||Bet365, Betfred|
|Norab (ew)||3.50 Newmarket||66/1||Bet365, Betfred|
The other horse to back at HQ this afternoon is CLEAR CUT in the Autumn Stakes. Jim Bolger has won this race before and it is surely a tip in itself that he lets this once raced maiden take his chance here.
|Clear Cut (ew)||2.35 Newmarket||11/1||Bet365|
Coral Sprint Trophy
The big race at York is the Coral Sprint Trophy and it is hard to know how much the ground will dry out before the off.
Genuinely soft ground would bring Aetna into the equation, but we think this may be the day that SUZI’S CONNOISSEUR finally gets his head in front. 7f just seems to stretch this gelding’s stamina so this looks his optimal trip and he will handle any give underfoot.
We are also going to give a last chance to the enigmatic HIGHLAND ACCLAIM who seems to have everything in his favour here. The draw is ideal and he’s a course and distance winner. He was possibly drawn on the wrong side last time out in the Ayr Gold Cup and a repeat of his Portland effort before that should see him go close.
|Suzi’s Connoisseur||3.25 York||14/1||Coral, Bet365|
|Highland Acclaim||3.25 York||12/1||Bet365|
Chepstow sees the real start of the jumps racing season and it is a shame none of the races on its excellent card have made their way onto terrestrial TV.
Weatherbys Hamilton Hurdle
The novice chase at 3.20 is a real appetiser for the battles to come this winter but the first horse to back at the Welsh circuit is DEXCITE in what used to be known at the Free Handicap. Tom George’s four year old went into our notebooks after a fine run at Newbury on his final start last season and he could prove to be well treated.
|Dexcite (ew)||3.55 Chepstow||7/1||Stan James|
Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle
The Silver Trophy that follows could be at the mercy of THE LIQUIDATOR.
This horse has had some injury problems, but David Pipe is as good as anyone when it comes to bringing a horse back from a layoff and this formerly high class novice will surely be suited by stepping up in trip here.
Course and distance winner, CARNINGLI, looks the biggest danger for the in-form Rebecca Curtis team.
|The Liquidator (ew)||4.30 Chepstow||6/1||Stan James|
|Carningli (ew)||4.30 Chepstow||14/1||Bet365|

Finally, the bet of the day could prove to be SAUSALITO SUNRISE in the 3m Handicap Chase that follows. Phillips Hobbs’ charge has plenty of weight, but he is a classy performer and could easily defy this mark before going on to better things as the season progresses.
Again, a Curtis runner, Audacious Plan, looks the danger although Drop Out Joe is also respected. We will be backing both to cover a decent size wager on the Hobbs runner.
|Sausalito Sunrise (win)||5.05 Chepstow||11/4||Bet365, Stan James|
