Hennessy Gold Cup Chase
The Hennessy Gold Cup has a habit of throwing up champion chasers of the future and a new star could emerge today in the form of Paul Nicholls’ SAPHIR DU RHEU.
His career over fences had a chequered start, but the penny really seems to have dropped now and Nicholls has always seen this horse as a potential Gold Cup winner. If he is to figure in the season’s premier event he will need to win this, despite having to carry top weight.
Carruthers’ absence means he isn’t a great price, but he needs to be backed to at least cover any other selections in the race.
If In Doubt will be a threat if his jumping hold up, whilst Houblon Des Obeaux will love the track and the ground, but the other two to be on are THE YOUNG MASTER and THEATRE GUIDE.
The former ran no sort of race in the RSA Chase, but prior to that had looked a really progressive handicapper and, with another summer on his back, can run a big race here. He should be better suited by going left handed, despite having won some decent prizes going the other way.
Theatre Guide has always been highly rated by Colin Tizzard and he was third in this race two years ago. His yard is in better form this season than it was last and if this horse is over the problems that have confined him to so few starts in his career to date he has a massive chance of causing a shock from the foot of the weights.

|Theatre Guide (ew)||3.00 Newbury||16/1||Bet365, Betfred, Paddy Power|
At The Races Rehearsal Chase
Tizzard could prove the man to follow across the country today as his MASTERS HILL looks the one to beat in the Rehearsal Chase up at Newcastle. He was an eye-catching second to a better treated rival at Carlisle on his comeback and looks well handicapped here.
The Last Samuri looks a big danger, but if conditions deteriorate at Gosforth Park then WILLIAM MONEY could easily run into the money off bottom weight. The trip may be on the short side, but that is a chance worth taking given his price and the current form of Chris Grants’ yard.
|Masters Hill (ew)||2.40 Newcastle||6/1||Bet365, Betfred|
|William Money (ew)||2.40 Newcastle||25/1||Bet365|
Fighting Fifth Hurdle
The Fighting Fifth is the other big race at the northern circuit and we think the two at the head of the market are worth opposing. Either Top Notch or BELTOR could upset the odds and our preference is for Beltor at the prices, as he is unexposed and open to any end of improvement.
|Beltor (ew)||2.05 Newcastle||9/1||Bet365|
bet365 Long Distance Hurdle
Back at Newbury, Tizzard could have some success in the other Graded race on the card, the Long Distance Hurdle, as THISTLECRACK looked a stayer to follow at the back end of last season. He may need the run here, but looks better value than Whisper or World Hurdle winner Cole Harden.
Don’t rule out DEPUTY DAN either. He didn’t really take to fences, but was a top class staying novice hurdler in his own right and won’t mind however soft the going gets.
|Thistlecrack (ew)||2.25 Newbury||4/1||Bet365, Paddy Power|
|Deputy Dan (ew)||2.25 Newbury||18/1||Bet365, Paddy Power|
Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle
A Listed Mares Hurdle opens the card and these races can provide shocks a plenty so it is worth a small interest in the two outsiders, VERY EXTRAVAGANT and FORTUNATA FASHIONS.
|Very Extravagant (ew)||12.15 Newbury||12/1||Bet365|
|Fortunata Fasions (ew)||12.15 Newbury||25/1||Bet365|
bet365.com Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase
The following Fulke Walwyn Trophy looks to be between ARZAL and FULL SHIFT.
Arzal ran really well for one so inexperienced in some top handicap hurdles last year and looks to have taken to fences judging by his win last time out, whilst Full Shift was always biding his time over the smaller obstacles as is really built to be a chaser.
|Arzal (ew)||12.45 Newbury||13/2||Paddy Power|
|Full Shift (ew)||12.45 Newbury||11/2||Bet365|
