There is live televised coverage of four races at Ascot on Channel 4, starting at 1.50, 2.25, 3.00 and 3.35, plus two races from Haydock at 2.05 and 2.40.
Sodexo Silver Cup Handicap Chase
The ground at Ascot has dried out overnight ahead of two really competitive and valuable handicaps.
First up at 3.00pm are the chasers and the Silver Cup, and we think the form of last month’s Hennessy could prove key here.
Fingal Bay still looks incredibly well handicapped over fences and he ran a blinder at Newbury having flopped badly in the same race the year before. If that effort hasn’t taken its toll, he could gain compensation here as the slight drop back in trip should suit him assuming he is given another positive ride.
However, the worry is the very had race he had that day and so a better bet might be THE YOUNG MASTER. He didn’t fare very as well behind Fingal Bay having got no further than the first, but that may prove to be a blessing in disguise as he comes here a fresh horse. The only worry is his tendency to jump left, but that didn’t stop him winning this last year.
THE GIANT BOLSTER was also last seen out in the Hennessy, where he ran well for a long way before fading into seventh. He is tumbling down the weights and we can’t resist an each way interest in him as he looks way over-priced. He can be a bit temperamental, and there is no way of knowing how he will take to his first visit here, but the odds are too good to miss.
Finally, MA FILLEULE also looks a big threat now back over fences. She has also been crying out for this step up in trip and the drying ground should have brought her right back into the equation.
William Hill are offering 4 places for each-way bets on the race (3 places elsewhere).

The hurdlers take centre stage in the Ladbroke, where we are really keen on the chances of ZARIB. His excellent young trainer, Dan Skelton, has done really well in these big handicaps and this horse looks an ideal sort to add to that record. He is lightly raced and open to improvement, and put up a decent effort in a hot contest at Wincanton on his comeback.
He is one of a bunch of four year olds who look to have big chances here, albeit that this race hasn’t been kind to that age group down the years.
The trends suggest we should supplement the selection with an older horse or two, and the one we like are RENNETI and SGT RECKLESS.
The start will be the key to the former’s chances as he has planted himself at the tapes before. He did that in the Greatwood and still finished fourth and he clearly has loads of natural talent.
The same is true of Sgt Reckless who was a top novice a few seasons back. He hasn’t really taken to fences, but should enjoy the end to end gallop here and if the ground really does dry out he could look a massive price come the off.
Nearly all bookmakers are offering 5 places for each-way bets on this race.

Tommy Whittle Handicap Chase
The Tommy Whittle is the big race at Haydock, where the ground is very definitely heavy.
Final Assualt looks the one to beat, but he emptied quite quickly last time out and a better option may be O MAONLAI, who was an eye-catcher when 2nd at Newbury on his comeback. He should improve for that outing and loves these conditions.

Racing UK Anywhere Novices’ Chase
The best bet at Haydock is ASO, who looks unopposable in the novices chase at 12.15pm.
