There is live televised racing from Kempton, Newcastle and Lingfield on ITV4 today.
Adonis Juvenile Hurdle
With only a couple of weeks until the Cheltenham Festival time is running out for horses to throw their hats into the ring for the sport’s showcase event, but there should be some more clues at Kempton, where a star studded cast is headed by Charli Parcs.
He looks another potential superstar in the making for Messrs Henderson and McManus and if he wins here, as he should, it will be interesting to see if he is aimed at the Supreme or the Triumph. The ground has come right for him and the rest look to be playing for places.
However, there are some juicy each way prices available and the two we like are FLYING TIGER and PERCY STREET.
Nick Williams does well with his juveniles and he has always held Flying Tiger in high regard. However, he has been scuppering his chances by pulling too hard in his races. He got his act together at Newbury last time and there should be more to come.
Percy Street was very highly rated on the flat and has switched to hurdles with mixed results. The ground is key to him, though, and he could leave his disappointing defeat last time out behind on this flat track back on good ground.
Bedrock is an interesting newcomer to consider.
|Flying Tiger (ew)||1.50 Kempton||20/1||Bet365|
|Percy Street (ew)||1.50 Kempton||28/1||Bet365|
Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle
There is another quality novices’ hurdle at 3.00 – the Dovecote. If the dead eight go to post there should be some interesting each way options and the one we like is MISTER UNIVERSUM for the in-form Dan Skelton. He was useful on the flat and ran well on his first race over hurdles at Newbury recently.
Of those at the head of the market, we prefer CAPTAIN FOREZ. He looks the type to keep improving and should make a fine chaser in time. He doesn’t have much to find on recent form with the favourite, Captaine.
|Mister Universum (ew)||3.00 Kempton||33/1||Bet365|
|Captain Forez (ew)||3.00 Kempton||11/2||Bet365|
BetBright Handicap Chase
The Betbright Chase is the day’s big betting heat and of the favourites we favour IRISH SAINT.
Paul Nicholls’ charge missed last season, but has gradually been returning to form and fitness since. Back on this better ground he can take advantage of a reasonable looking mark here.
There are plenty of dangers, including a number at bigger prices.
The two we like are the Nicky Henderson pair of COCKTAILS AT DAWN and TRIOLO D’ALENE. Both are very much ground dependent and can leave early season form behind if the rain stays away.
They are also well handicapped on their best form with former Hennessy winner, Triolo D’Alene having won here in the past.
Viva Steve and Fingerontheswitch are the others to note.
|Irish Saint (ew)||3.35 Kempton||5/1||Bet365|
|Cocktails At Dawn (ew)||3.35 Kempton||25/1||Bet365|
|Triolo D’Alene (ew)||3.35 Kempton||18/1||Bet365|
Eider Handicap Chase
Up at Newcastle, the Eider Chase is the big race and with the ground on the heavy side the marathon trip will turn into a real war of attrition.
The one we really like is ALTO DES MOTTES. He’ll relish the ground and could improve for tackling this longer trip for the first time. Trainer Harry Hogarth does very well with his small string.
Kerry Lee is an expert when it comes to preparing horses for this type of contest and either MOUNTAINOUS or Russe Blanc could also win this. Picking between the two isn’t easy, but we’ve always had a soft spot for Mountainous so he just gets the nod.
Finally, with Kim Bailey’s horses in flying form, KNOCKANRAWLEY should also be backed. He was fourth in this last year and looks to have been laid out for a repeat bid. He is lightly raced enough to still be improving, unlikely many of these.
|Alto Des Mottes (ew)||2.45 Newcastle||11/1||Bet365|
|Mountainous (ew)||2.45 Newcastle||10/1||Bet365|
|Knockanrawley (ew)||2.45 Newcastle||14/1||Bet365|
Betfred Super League Novices’ Chase
The other horse to back at Newcastle is heavy ground specialist ZAMDY MAN.
We are slightly surprised to see him as second favourite for the Betfred Novices Chase, so snap up Stan James’ 6/4 before it goes.
|Zamdy Man (win)||3.20 Newcastle||6/4||Stan James|
Keep an eye out too for Champ in the concluding bumper at Kempton (4.45pm). He makes little appeal as a betting prospect but could prove to be very useful in time.
