Greatwood Veterans’ Handicap Chase
It is Greatwood day at Newbury today and our first selections run in the Greatwood Veterans’ Chase at 2.05.
These veterans’ races are becoming classier affairs with each passing season and Happy Topper and O’FAOLAINS BOY stand out in this field as both have had Gold Cup aspirations in the past.
As a result, either or both could prove to be thrown in off their current marks and the ground could dictate which comes out on top.
Harry Topper can’t get the ground soft enough whilst any improvement in the going description will suit his rival. At the prices, we narrowly prefer O’Faolains Boy.
KATENKO is also a former top class chaser and his connections believe he still has a race or two in him. Indeed, there has been some encouragement in his two starts so far this season despite the uninspiring form figures and he is worth chancing at the price. He’d like the ground as soft as possible.
|O’Faolains Boy (ew)||2.05 Newbury||7/1||Stan James|
|Katenko (ew)||2.05 Newbury||12/1||Bet365|
Greatwood Handicap Hurdle
Another veteran, MELODIC RENDEZVOUS, has a good chance in the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle that follows. Jeremy Scott’s 11 year old is another mud lark and conditions appear much softer on the hurdles track.
He really caught the eye behind Yanworth at Wincanton last time out and he looks to have Chesterfield and Bloody Mary to beat.
|Melodic Rendezvous (ew)||2.40 Newbury||8/1||Bet365|
Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase
The most valuable race on the card is the Greatwood Gold Cup and it is a race that has been farmed by Paul Nicholls in the past. He has another good chance today with the classy VIBRATO VALTAT who looks interesting in the first time blinkers.
O’Maonlai is a massive danger if on a going day, but the horse open to most improvement is VIC DE TOUZAINE.
He’s lightly raced and clearly fragile, but a lot of his form has worked out well and this jockey/trainer combination took the race in 2014.
|Vibrato Valtat (ew)||3.15 Newbury||8/1||Bet365|
|Vic De Touzaine (ew)||3.15 Newbury||9/2||Bet365|
Grimthorpe Handicap Chase
Venetia Williams could be in for a good day as we also fancy her runner in Doncaster’s big race, the Grimpthorpe. Soft ground will really suit YALA ENKI, who still looks unexposed over fences.
Don’t rule out a return to form for WAKANDA either with the Sue Smith yard in good form. If he re-adopts his usual front running tactics here he should run much better than over a trip too far for him last time out.
|Yala Enki (win)||3.35 Doncaster||3/1||Bet365|
|Wakanda (ew)||3.35 Doncaster||12/1||Bet365|
Premier Kelso Novices’ Hurdle
There are a couple of good contests at Kelso as well, and heavy ground and small fields could lead to a shock or two.
Capitaine definitely looks vulnerable in the Grade 2 Novices’ Hurdle at 3.25 on ground that really shouldn’t suit him.
Mount Mew is an obvious threat and the best option may be to back him to cover a larger each way stake on the outsider, Fairlee Grey, who has won here on heavy ground already this season.
|Fairlee Grey (ew)||3.25 Kelso||10/1||Bet365|
Bernardelli is also a course winner on heavy going and he is an interesting option against the horses who dominate the market in the Premier Chase at 4.00pm – Tenor Nivernais and Le Mercurey.
Both those horses have plenty in hand at the weights, but these contest often don’t work out as the formbook would suggest, so back BERNARDELLI and SELDOM INN in the hope of a decent payout should either pull off a shock.
|Bernardelli (ew)||4.00 Kelso||28/1||Bet365|
|Seldom Inn (ew)||4.00 Kelso||9/1||Paddy Power|
