Saturday Horse Racing Tips

The weather doesn’t feel very summery at the moment, so it is fitting that the jumpers return to centre stage this afternoon courtesy of a couple of valuable contests at Market Rasen.

Betfred Summer Plate Handicap Chase

By far the most interesting is the Summer Plate, where none of the 16 runners can be completely ruled out.

We fancied SHELFORD to land a similar race at Uttoxeter recently and we are going to give him another chance here for the inform Dan Skelton. An end to end gallop over this slightly shorter trip may play to his strengths and, crucially, he will be well suited by any more rain that falls.

As usual, JP McManus is well represented in the race and of his three runners we like CUP FINAL. He had some good form over hurdles for Nicky Henderson including a win at the Punchestown Festival and he seems to be getting his career back on track for new handler, Ben Haslam.

Sky Bet are offering 5 places for each-way bets on this race (3 places elsewhere).

Weatherbys Super Sprint Stakes

Newbury’s big race is the Super Sprint Trophy and – despite not being a handicap – most bookies are offering 4 places, while Paddy Power offer 5 places and Sky Bet 6.

In terms of trends, those drawn high have been most successful recently, whilst fillies have also fared well.

Of those with a high berth in the stalls, we like CORINTHIA KNIGHT. His trainer, Archie Watson, is starting to make a name for himself and to underline the fact he has had five winners from his last 15 runners. This horse has been beaten in better races on his last two starts, but could get back to winning ways on softer ground that might suit.

In terms of the fillies, the pick could be ONE FOR JUNE, despite her low draw. She stays 6f, so a fast run contest will really suit and she has proven form with give underfoot. Her stamina should come into play at the business end of the contest.

For those looking for one at a monster price, it is interesting that Clive Cox throws SWING OUT SISTER in at the deep end here. He has had an excellent season with his two year olds.

bet365 Hackwood Stakes

The Group contest at Newbury is the Hackwood Stakes over 6f. RAUCOUS was third in the race last year and we think he can improve on that effort here. He was well backed for the Wokingham last time out, but had no luck in running so hopefully compensation awaits here.

BetBright Recall Handicap

Finally, we are going to give one last chance to old favourite (and old rogue!) BOSSY GUEST over at HQ. Hopefully, he can cope with the softening of the ground and he still looks remarkably well handicapped. Over this mile trip it shouldn’t matter if he is as slowly away as he usually is.

Ladbrokes and Coral are both offering 4 places for each-way bets (3 elsewhere).
