Sebastien Vettel shocked the F1 world by plonking his Ferrari on pole in Singapore a full second quicker than Lewis Hamilton, who could only qualify fifth. Mercedes were at a loss to explain their lack of pace on a circuit where they just don’t seem to have been able to hook up with the unique demands of the tyres.

As a result, Vettel is a 4/7 shot to win the race now, with Daniel Ricciardo a 9/2 poke in the Red Bull behind him. We fancied Red Bull for pace before the race weekend and with track position on the Mercedes guys now, Ricciardo feels a pretty decent e/w bet at 9/2 on a track which plays to the strengths of the Red Bull package. You are getting 6/4 about a top 2 finish, which given he is no longer than 4/9 for a podium spot, seems pretty fair.

Further down the order, the fight for points’ positions looks rather different prospect to normal as well, with Lotus and Force India finding things somewhat harder than in recent races and Williams unable to fight right at the front.

Things look to be falling well for the talented Max Verstappen, but it’s hard to see much of an angle when he is 4/6 for a points finish, so instead it could be worth banking on his team mate Carlos Sainz recovering from a disappointing qualifying incident to finish inside the top 10. He was well on course to qualify at least that high before an incident saw him miss out on final shoot out, and he should be too quick for the likes of Alonso and Perez on the day. He’s 5/4 for a Top 10 finish.
