The first event of the four-week FedEx Cup play-off series takes place at Plainfield Country Club in Edison, New Jersey. The tournament switches venues each year and was last staged at the par 71 Plainfield course back in 2011, when Dustin Johnson was the winner in three rounds after the tournament was shortened by the threat of Hurricane Irene. Nicknamed the Green Monster, the course features varied and testing par threes, sharp changes in elevation and several blind tee-shots, while the par-five 12th is renowned as being one of the best in the States. The defending champion is Hunter Mahan (150/1 Coral), although his win was at a different venue.

New world number one Jordan Spieth is the market leader at a best price of 13/2 with Ladbrokes, followed by Jason Day, who pipped him to victory at the US PGA a fortnight ago. The Australian is a 10/1 chance with Paddy Power who offer 6 places for each-way bets (just 5 places elsewhere). Justin Rose and Dustin Johnson are both 12/1 chances and beyond that there’s a big leap in prices to Bubba Watson at 25/1.

Webb SimpsonWEBB SIMPSON gave his FedEx Cup standing a significant boost at the Wyndham Championship, where he continued his superb run of results at his favourite venue with a share of sixth place. His form has been pretty good over the last few months and his top 10 finish at Plainfield four years ago is another factor in his favour. Bet365Betfred and Ladbrokes are all offering the 2012 US Open winner at best odds of 66/1.

Brandt SnedekerBRANDT SNEDEKER‘s 8th place finish at the US Open and share of 12th at the PGA suggest he could be getting back towards his best. Those results have boosted his FedEx Cup position and he sits 13th coming into the play-offs, with eight top 10s against his name this season. A stunning round of 61 on the third and final day gave him a share of 3rd place here 4 years ago and he looks a great each-way bet at 40/1 with the 6 places at Paddy Power.

Matt KucharThis looks like being MATT KUCHAR’s worst season in six years unless he can secure a win during the play-off series, yet he remains one of the PGA Tour’s most consistent performers and makes the cut at almost every event he plays, missing only one this season. He was seventh at the US PGA, but perhaps more importantly he was the runner-up to Dustin Johnson the last time this event visited Plainfield. Bet365 offer best odds of 35/1.
