Venue

East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, has staged the closing event of the PGA Tour season since 2004, during which time the tournament has been won by Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Henrik Stenson and, last year, Billy Horschel. The home course of the legendary Bobby Jones, East Lake’s par 70 layout has been made tougher in recent years by a switch to Bermuda grass greens, which combined with punishing rough reward accuracy off the tee rather than power and length.

Favourites

Can anyone stop Jason Day? The Australian dominated from start to finish at the BMW Championship, winning the title by six shots to claim his fourth victory in six appearances. It’s an incredible run of form from a man who has promised so much over the last couple of years with several near misses in major championships and he is a best price of just 18/5 with Stan James to get the better of this 30-man field. The second favourite is Rory McIlroy at 7/1 with Betfred and Stan James, with the Northern Irishman preferred by the bookies to Jordan Spieth, who has faded a little as the season nears its end. Spieth is a 9/1 chance with Betfred and Coral. Other challengers this week include Stenson, the in-form Rickie Fowler and Justin Rose.

Tips

Paul CaseyPAUL CASEY makes only his second visit to East Lake and his first since finishing in a share of fourth place here five years ago. It’s a reward for a solid season on the PGA Tour, which has seen the Englishman post two second and two third place finishes. He’s been consistent rather than spectacular, but he can go close this week and with all the focus on the leading stars he looks a big price at 50/1 with Sky Bet, who are offering 5 places.

Robert-StrebIt’s been some breakthrough season for ROBERT STREB, who has finished in the top 25 at more than half of his events and turned nine of those into top 10 places, including a victory at the McGladrey Classic last October. He was in the top 10 in last week’s PGA Championship and is another talent available at an attractive each-way price. Several firms are offering 66/1, but again head to Sky Bet with those 5 places (4 places elsewhere).

Bubba-Watson1BUBBA WATSON hasn’t enjoyed too much success on his previous visits to East Lake, but he has been on an excellent run of form over the closing months of the season and can certainly be competitive here. A few poor previous performances at this venue is the most likely explanation for him being a much bigger price than the likes of Rose and Fowler. BetVictor are offering best odds of 22/1 – or get 20/1 with Sky Bet and that extra place.
