After an exciting conclusion to the desert swing, with Danny Willett’s victory in Dubai, the European Tour returns to South Africa this week for the Tshwane Open, which will be held for the second time at the Pretoria Country Club. George Coetzee, who won last year’s event by one shot from Jacques Blaauw, returns to his home club to defend his trophy. The par 70 course is on the short side with several tight, tree-lined fairways, but Coetzee’s winning score of 14-under proves not only that there are plenty of birdie opportunities but also that local knowledge can be a significant advantage.

Coetzee has made a solid start to the year, with a top 10 in Qatar and a couple of decent rounds at the weekend in Dubai, and the three-time European Tour winner will take some beating on a course he knows so well. The star name in this week’s field is the former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, who has claimed seven of his 10 European titles in his native South Africa. Schwartzel is the 6/1 favourite with Bet365 or Betfred, while Coetzee is an 8/1 chance with Ladbrokes and Hills. Recent winners Brandon Stone and Haydn Porteous will also attract some interest here and they are both near the top of the betting at 33/1 and 30/1 respectively.

David HorseyDAVID HORSEY‘s year has been steady so far, with three consecutive finishes in the 30s and he’s not too far off the level that brought him victory in Denmark last August, which he followed with a third place in Russia in early September. Horsey was in the top 10 at the Pretoria Country Club 12 months ago and BetVictor offer stand-out odds of 33/1, which look more than fair in a weaker than usual field on the European Tour.

Justin-WaltersJUSTIN WALTERS has produced some impressive displays in his native South Africa recently, finishing in the top 20 at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in November after regaining his Tour card and going on to post top fives in both Ekurhuleni and Joburg last month. With 5 places for each-way bets, he looks worth backing at best odds of 40/1 currently available with BetVictor (just 25/1 with Ladbrokes).

Zander-LombardZANDER LOMBARD is a young South African on a hot streak which should stand him in good stead as he makes his second appearance at Tshwane. The 21-year-old missed the cut by a distance 12 months ago, but he didn’t have the benefit then of supreme confidence, as he should have right now. Lombard was fourth in December’s Australian PGA Championship, finished in 12th at the SA Open and was then runner-up in Joburg.
