Venue

The third edition of the Turkish Airlines Open takes place once again at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal course in Antalya. The 7,133-yard par 72 course plays through mature pine forest and around eight lakes, which provide numerous water hazards although Victor Dubuisson’s winning total of 24-under here two years ago suggests the course can be tamed. Brooks Koepka won this event last year, ahead of Ian Poulter, but the American has opted against returning to defend his title.

Favourites

There may be no defending champion, but there are several star names in a strong field, led by current world no.3 Rory McIlroy, who of course is the market leader in the betting at odds of 9/2. McIlroy’s presence means that there are some big prices available elsewhere, with Shane Lowry next up at 16/1 and beyond that, everyone is 20s or bigger. Bernd Wiesberger, Danny Willett, Ian Poulter, Charl Schwartzel and recent European Tour winners Andy Sullivan and Matthew Fitzpatrick are also at the top end of the market.

Tips

MATTHEW-FITZPATRICKA string of good results have pushed MATTHEW FITZPATRICK to 11th place in the Race to Dubai and having backed him to victory at the British Masters and a third place finish in Hong Kong we will be sticking with him in Turkey. The talented 21-year-old has finished in the top three at four of his last six tournaments and if you look a little further back it is 6 of the last 13. It’s a fine record and he can keep things going this week, at best odds of 22/1.

Soren KjeldsenAfter three successive top 10 finishes, SOREN KJELDSEN‘s form dipped a little on his last outing in Portugal where he shared 33rd place, but it’s a mark of how good his season has been that his performance in the Algarve was considered well below par. The Dane is eighth on the Race to Dubai after an impressive string of results and he appeals at the stand-out odds of 45/1 on offer with Stan James (just 33/1 elsewhere).

Andy SullivanANDY SULLIVAN won on his last outing in Portugal by nine shots to become the first three-time winner on the European Tour this season and moving him up to no.47 in the world rankings. He will be confident of mounting another serious challenge here, having shared 4th place last year, when a second round of 75 ruined his chances of victory. Rounds of 67, 66 and 67 highlight what he is capable of around this layout and he looks a real contender.
