Sebastian Vettel has been cut to a best price of 6/4 with Bet365 to win a fifth world title after outpacing market leader Lewis Hamilton to win the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
Hamilton had taken pole position by being a shade over a quarter of a second quicker than Vettel and thus reinforcing his position as the title favourite.
However Vettel, whose Ferrari had proved quicker than Hamilton’s Mercedes in pre-season testing in Spain, was the faster man when it mattered whilst also benefitting from slower tyre wear.
Significantly, too, Hamilton lost ground when he emerged from an early pit stop behind Max Verstappen, who frustrated his initial attempts to overtake.
It was Vettel’s first race win since Singapore back in 2015 and although he remains 2nd favourite, the betting suggests a straight head-to-head scrap between the two.
From 4/6 on Saturday evening, the Englishman is now available at best price 11/10 with Ladbrokes to add to the titles he won in 2008, 2014 and 2015.
