Venue

The leading players from the European and PGA Tours come together this week in China for the WGC-HSBC Champions event at the Sheshan International GC, where Russell Knox will defend the title he won 12 months ago. Water hazards, narrow fairways and small targets can make this par 72, 7,143-yard layout challenging, particularly if they are combined with tricky pin positions as they were in 2014, although Dustin Johnson won with a 24-under-par total in 2013 and Knox’s winning total last year was 20-under. Phil Mickelson, Francesco Molinari, Martin Kaymer, Bubba Watson and Sergio Garcia have also won the WGC tournament at this venue.

Favourites

Rory McIlroy is rarely far from the top of the leaderboard at Sheshan, with his 11th place at last year’s edition comfortably his worst performance in five visits here, and the Northern Irishman is best price 11/2 favourite with Betfair to record a victory at the sixth attempt. Dustin Johnson, the 2013 champion, is available at 6/1 with Coral, BetVictor and Paddy Power, with every other player in the market priced at 22/1 or above. They start with Hideki Matsuyama and Henrik Stenson, with Paul Casey and Adam Scott at 25/1. Last week’s CIMB Classic champion Justin Thomas is a 30/1 shot with Betfred, while Garcia can be backed at 33/1 with most firms.

Tips

Brooks KoepkaBROOKS KOEPKA returns to action on the PGA Tour for the first time since his brilliant performance for the United States in the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine, where he scored 3 points for his team. Widely regarded a player destined for the very top, the 26-year- old has played well at the majors this year before that wonderful show against the Europeans, which should be an ideal confidence boost. The American looks too big at odds of 45/1 with BetVictor.

rickie-fowlerRICKIE FOWLER‘s year began in fine fashion with a string of good results, but it gave way to a disappointing summer, before he closed the season with an improved run of form which proved just enough to land him a place in the Ryder Cup team. He then rewarded Davis Love’s show of faith by collecting 2 points from his 3 matches and he has some previous here too, finishing third at Sheshan in 2014. Back him at best odds of 50/1 at Stan James.

alex_norenAfter two wins in four starts, ALEX NOREN was unable to keep the momentum going at the Portugal Masters last week, where he finished down in 37th place. Yet it’s a measure of just how well the Swede is playing that he is 64-under-par for his last 20 competitive rounds, which have netted him in excess of €1m, and the betting market has perhaps underestimated Europe’s star performer over the last few months. Betfred are offering a stand-out price of 55/1.
