The PDC World Darts Championship gets underway on Thursday, with Gary Anderson looking to make it a hat-trick of victories at Ally Pally following his successes in each of the last two years.
The Scot beat Adrian Lewis 7-5 in the final last January to follow on from his 7-6 win over 14-time champion Phil Taylor a year earlier.
But Michael van Gerwen, whose only success in this tournament came three years ago, dominates the pre-tournament betting. The Dutch world number one has won all eight of the PDC’s premier events since his shock third round exit to Raymond Van Barneveld at last year’s World Championship, and is no bigger than the 8/11 with Betfred, Paddy Power & tournament sponsor William Hill.
By contrast, since retaining his title at the Alexandra Palace, Anderson has reached only one major final, losing 5-2 to van Gerwen at the World Grand Prix. Taylor, who hasn’t won any of the premier events for two years now, is the third favourite at 9/1.
