Venue

The Wyndham Championship has been played regularly at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina down the years and has been staged solely at this venue since 2008. Notable champions at Sedgefield include Sergio Garcia and Patrick Reed and last year’s winner was Camilo Villegas. The 7,130 yard Ross Course features tree-lined fairways, thick rough and mostly uphill or downhill tee-shots. There are plenty of birdie opportunities though as Carl Pettersson’s course record total of 21-under-par suggests.

Favourites

There are several big names in this week’s field so it may come as a surprise that Brooks Koepka is the market leader. However, the 25-year-old is in a rich vein of form which has seen him finish in the top 20 on his last six starts, including a share of fifth place at Whistling Straits. Koepka is generally available at 16/1, which puts him ahead of 20/1 chances Brandt Snedeker and Hideki Matsuyama. Branden Grace, who played so well at the weekend, is a 25/1 shot alongside Adam Scott, who endured a miserable two rounds at the US PGA. Others near the top of the betting include Martin Kaymer and Billy Horschel, while Tiger Woods is available at 50/1.

Tips

Justin ThomasJUSTIN THOMAS was one of the stars of the Web.Com Tour last season and although he has taken some time to adjust in his rookie year on the PGA Tour he has been in sparkling form in the last few weeks, following up back-to-back top fives at the John Deere Classic and Quicken Loans National with a top 20 finish at the US PGA. He’s a hugely promising talent and should be backed to continue his purple patch in Greensboro at 28/1 with BetVictorSky Bet or Coral.

Paul CaseyPAUL CASEY is 22nd in the FedEx Cup standings as we move towards the play-offs, with his position boosted by a run of seven tournaments without missing a cut since he was forced to withdraw from the Players Championship. That run includes a runners-up finish at the Travelers Championship and his top 20 place at last year’s Wyndham Championship indicates he can be competitive once again. Bet365 offer the Englishman at 35/1.

Webb SimpsonWEBB SIMPSON is impossible to ignore at Sedgefield, where he won his first PGA Tour title in 2011. His record here in the last five years reads 8-1-22-11-5 and while he hasn’t won this season he went close in May, finishing tied for second at the Wells Fargo Championship behind Rory McIlory. The 2012 US Open winner hails from the nearby city of Raleigh in North Carolina and is available at a stand-out 33/1 with Stan James.

Carl Pettersson CARL PETTERSSON is another specialist here – along with his spectacular 2008 victory he has posted two top fives and a share of 18th place in the last four years. He has proved more than once that when on song he can blitz this course and his recent form gives cause for optimism, with two top five places in his last six outings. In that time he has shot 66 or lower in seven rounds.  Coral and Stan James are quoting 66/1, which is surely too big.
