A brilliant century from Jos Buttler gave England an unlikely victory over Australia in Sunday’s final One Day International at Old Trafford to complete a 5-0 series whitewash. Chasing just 206 for the win, England were in all sorts of trouble when Buttler was joined at the crease by Adil Rashid with the score at 114-8, but the pair put on a superb 81 for the ninth wicket before Buttler eased his side home with nine balls to spare.
Earlier in the week England had smashed a world record 50-over score of 481-6 in the third match at Trent Bridge, before chasing down a target of 310 in the fourth game at Durham. It was a thoroughly convincing series win and highlights why England are the 11/4 favourites with Coral for next summer’s World Cup, which they will host over a six-week period from the end of May. Australia will be the defending champions, but on this evidence they clearly have work to do to rebuild ahead of the competition. India are the 4/1 second favourites, with Australia at 9/2 with Bet365.
