The final event of the European Tour’s Race to Dubai lived up to its billing as Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, Tommy Fleetwood and the defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick all challenged at the top of the leaderboard, but it was Jon Rahm who came through the pack on Sunday to see off a stunning challenge from Shane Lowry and win by one shot.
Rahm, the world number five, carded rounds of 69, 68, 65 and 67 to secure his third title of 2017 and land odds of 12/1 for his backers. Just 18 months ago the Spaniard was outside of the world’s top 500, but he has quickly established himself as one of golf’s leading stars and he was at his brilliant best in Dubai, where Fleetwood did enough to secure the overall Race to Dubai title.
The next step for Rahm is to build his reputation in the majors – he was the leading amateur at the 2016 US Open when he finished 23rd, but that remains his best major performance. Bet365 make him a 22/1 chance to win The Masters next April, while he is the same price with Coral to win the Open Championship.
