Danny Willett put a tough couple of years behind him with victory at the DP World Tour Championship – his first win since his 2016 Masters success. The 31-year-old moved up to ninth in the world rankings with his surprise win at Augusta, but was subsequently dogged by a back injury and a loss of form.
By May of this year he was down to 462nd in the world and was at best a peripheral figure at most tournaments. Since regaining his fitness he has shown the occasional spark, notably when he finished sixth at the Irish Open in the summer, but his 80/1 win in Dubai was still somewhat out of the blue.
All bookmakers have cut his price for next April’s Masters and he is currently a best price of 100/1* with Bet365 to win his second Green Jacket.
Francesco Molinari was the other big winner this weekend, with the Open champion seeing off the challenge of Tommy Fleetwood to claim the Race to Dubai title. It caps a magnificent 2018 for the Italian, who won his maiden major title at The Open before starring in Europe’s Ryder Cup triumph in September.
