Venue

The Abu Dhabi Golf Club has been hosting this event since 2005 and the 7,600-yard layout has proved profitable for the big name, big hitters, with Martin Kaymer a three-time winner and Paul Casey lifting the trophy twice. The course features lush fairways, 7 lakes and 90 bunkers, with generous greens providing some balance to those obstacles. Tommy Fleetwood began his fantastic 2017 season with victory here, holding off the challenges of Dustin Johnson and Pablo Larrazabal to win by a shot, while Rickie Fowler, Larrazabal and Jamie Donaldson are other recent winners.

Favourites

This tournament usually attracts the biggest stars and this year is no exception, with the field headed by Dustin Johnson. The world no.1, who won the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii a fortnight ago, is a best price of 5/1 with Coral, who offer 7 places each-way, with Justin Rose an 8/1 chance after finishing 2017 in blistering form. Rory McIlroy is at 9/1 with Betfred as he makes his first appearance since October, two-time winner Paul Casey is 18/1 with Bet365 and two-time runner-up Henrik Stenson is at the same price with Paddy Power, who are also offering 7 places each-way here. Defending champion Fleetwood is at 22/1 with Bet365.

Tips

BERND WIESBERGER won in Shenzhen last year and had five further top 10 finishes to his name, including a share of fourth place at this event, and the consistent Austrian looks a great each-way pick at 50/1 with Betfred. Currently the world number 44, Wiesberger has ended each of the last six years comfortably inside the world’s top 100. His strong performance here last year wasn’t a one-off – he was also sixth at this venue in 2015.

Like Wiesberger, THORBJORN OLESEN has ended each of the last six years in the world’s top 100, boosting his ranking in the second half of 2017 by missing only one cut after the end of May. He was third at Le Golf National in July and posted a top 10 in a strong field at the WGC-Bridgestone a month later, while he was runner-up here five years ago. Betfred and Stan James are both offering a tempting best price 80/1 (as short as 55/1 elsewhere).

KIRADECH APHIBARNRAT has been in outstanding form over the past five months, posting top 20 finishes on 10 of his last 13 starts worldwide, including seven top 10s. He won a minor tournament in his native Thailand last month and was fifth last time out in Indonesia, having finished second in a top class field at the Tour Championship in November. He finished fourth here last year and should be shorter than Bet365 and Betfred‘s quote of 50/1.
