Bet365 have cut Sergio Aguero from 9/1 to 8/1* to be the Premier League’s leading goalscorer this season after his two goals gave Manchester City a 2-0 victory over Chelsea in Sunday’s Community Shield match at Wembley.
The 30-year-old Argentinian, who is beginning his eighth season at the Etihad Stadium, scored his 200th and 201st goals in a City shirt to take the plaudits on a hot afternoon in the capital, where Pep Guardiola’s side looked sharper and better prepared for the start of the league campaign than the FA Cup holders. Aguero has scored at least 20 league goals in each of the last four seasons, but he has started fewer and fewer games each year as he has struggled with injuries and then faced competition from Gabriel Jesus, explaining why he is fifth in the betting to win the Golden Boot.
Just as Guardiola took some time to shape his City side in his image, Maurizio Sarri will surely need several months to get his message across at Chelsea, but he will be concerned that they made little impression as an attacking force and failed to get a grip in midfield in a match the champions should have won more comfortably. The Blues look likely to be in another intense fight for a top four place, for which they are currently a best price of 8/11* with Betfred.
