Aintree Festival 2019 – Day 2 Tips

Day 2 of the Aintree festival kicks off with a very competitive handicap hurdle that is likely to be run on pretty testing ground after plenty of rain yesterday and overnight.

Merseyrail Handicap Hurdle

The one who appeals most is the Evan Williams trained ESPRIT DU LARGE, who gets in here off of a nice low weight and who will surely be suited by the step up in trip.

The main danger is another unexposed type, TEDHAM, who won for us at Wincanton last time out. He looks to have been laid out for this since.

Of those at bigger prices Kobrouk is worth a second look, whilst CALTEX could enjoy a return to hurdling after a mixed spell over fences earlier in the campaign.

William Hill are offering 7 places for each-way bets on this race.

Top Novices’ Hurdle

The first grade 1 action of the day is the Top Novices’ Hurdle, where Supreme third Itchy Feet looks worth opposing at the head of the market. The ground might not be ideal for the likes of Aramon, Sofia’s Rock and Southfield Stone either, so of the market leaders FELIX DESJY and Precious Cargo look the two to concentrate on. Slight preference in for Felix Desjy as this headstrong sort will surely be suited by the flat track here. He also has the hood back on today.

Of those at bigger prices the fast improving WINSTON C makes plenty of appeal. He won a competitive handicap at Kelso last time out under a big weight on soft ground.

Mildmay Novices’ Chase

After the novice hurdlers come the novice chasers and despite a hard race at Cheltenham Topofthegame should be very hard to beat in the Mildmay Novices’ Chase. However, the RSA can take a lot out of a horse, so LOSTINTRANSLATION appears the better value as he has looked ready for this step up in trip throughout the season.

If there is to be a shock then MR WHIPPED could be the one to provide it as he is unexposed over fences and has cheekpieces on for the first time today.

Melling Chase

The day’s feature race is the Melling Chase where the extremely talented, but fragile, WAITING PATIENTLY should get back to winning ways now that the ground has come in his favour. He looked in need of the race when chasing home Cyraname last time out with Politologue in behind. He comes here a fresh horse.

Over this trip, the main danger could be HELL’S KITCHEN who is also talented, but quirky. He ran a career best last time out when a staying on fourth in the Queen Mother.

Hell’s Kitchen (ew)3.25 Aintree12/1Bet365

Topham Handicap Chase

There’s action over the National fences next, where a massive field goes to post in the Topham. Stamina will be key given conditions and don’t expect there to be too many finishers.

Tom George, Nigel-Twiston Davies and Paul Nicholls all have two good chances in the race.

From the Nicholls yard we like ADRIEN DU PONT, who looks the first choice based on jockey bookings. This stiff test over 2m 5f should be perfect for him distance wise.

Last time out he was a staying on third in a valuable handicap at Kempton, where the classy Double Shuffle was runner up. Double Shuffle will enjoy the return to a flat track after being pulled up in the Gold Cup, but slight preference today is for his stablemates, ACTIVAL, who was sixth in the Ultima at Cheltenham last time out.

Of the Twiston-Davies pair, the vote narrowly goes to BALLYHILL, who has been running consistently well in good company all season. The slightly longer trip here could eek out some further improvement although Flying Angel shouldn’t be discounted.

Finally, amongst the outsiders the veteran HIGHLAND LODGE makes plenty of appeal now that the ground has come right for a horse that has an excellent record over these fences.

Betfair are offering 6 places for each-way bets on this race.
