Venue

The Royal Pines Resort in Queensland hosts the third edition of the Australian PGA Championship, which was won by Nathan Holman in its inaugural year and by the American Harold Varner III 12 months ago. The par 72 Championship course measures just over 7,300 yards and features tight fairways, undulating greens and a host of bunkers. There are some lengthy holes, including four huge par fives and a 230-yard par three.

Favourites

Marc Leishman is the top-ranked Australian in the field and the world number 13 is the joint favourite with Masters champion Sergio Garcia, with both men available at 7/1 with Coral – who are offering 7 places for each-way bets. Adam Scott has endured a poor 2017 since finishing third here last year – his most recent top five finish – and the world number 31 is at 8/1 across the board, ahead of Cameron Smith at 9/1 with Coral. The remainder of the field are all priced above 20/1, with defending champion Varner, who lost a play-off here in 2015, 25/1 with William Hill.

Tips

Ryan FoxRYAN FOX had a wonderful summer, finishing sixth, fourth and fourth at the French, Irish and Scottish Opens in July, and although his form tailed off towards the end of the season he remains one of the highest ranked Australian players in what is for the most part a weak field. He was 28th on his first appearance at this venue before finishing ninth last year and looks the pick of the top 10 in the betting at 33/1 with BetVictor.

Travis SmythTRAVIS SMYTH is one of the rising stars of Australian golf – finishing first, 11th and 10th on his last three starts. He began his impressive run by winning the Northern Territory PGA Championship, while at the weekend he finished 10th at the Australian Open, in a field featuring leading stars Jason Day and Jordan Spieth. He’s a 50/1 chance in places, but is worth an each-way bet at the stand-out odds of 80/1 available with Stan James.

Jason ScrivenerJASON SCRIVENER has not played especially well on his two previous visits to the Royal Pines Resort, with a share of 28th place in 2015 being his best performance, but two weeks after his maiden career victory at the NSW Open he will be full of confidence. He was in the top 20 again at the Australian Open on Sunday, having played well in Andalucia on his last European Tour outing. He’s a 35/1 chance with both Betfred and Betfair.
