Alan Pardew is clinging on to his job after a fifth straight league defeat for West Brom at Watford on Saturday. The Baggies looked doomed to relegation after slipping eight points from safety, while Stoke are also odds-on for the drop after their draw at Southampton.
The bookmakers rate Huddersfield and Crystal Palace as the next most likely clubs to go down, each at best odds of 9/4, but there are a host of teams looking anxiously over their shoulders with nine rounds of matches left to play.
Among them are West Ham, who suffered another major setback when they were thrashed at Swansea on Saturday and are now 5/1 with Bet365 and BetVictor in the relegation market. Also still deep in trouble are Newcastle, who have won only one of their last seven matches and were beaten at Liverpool on Saturday evening. Rafa Benitez stands out as the pick of the managers in the relegation scrap, but he hasn’t had the luxury of a large transfer budget and there are significant gaps in quality in his squad.
They face a nervy afternoon when Southampton visit St James’ Park next weekend, with the Saints unbeaten in six matches away from home, before Huddersfield visit the North East in their next match. Newcastle are currently 4/1 across the board to go down and the rest of March will go a long way to determining their fate.
