Chris Coleman will take charge of Sunderland for the first time this week, with the Black Cats 6/4 with Bet365 to be relegated for the second successive season after winning only one of their opening 17 Championship games. Despite missing out on a place at next summer’s World Cup in Russia, Coleman has significantly enhanced his reputation during his time in charge of Wales, having taken them all the way to the semi-finals of Euro 2016.
Saving Sunderland from the drop promises to be an even greater challenge, with his new club four points from safety and without a win at the Stadium of Light in 2017. Saturday’s 2-2 draw at home to Millwall made them the first English club ever to go 20 home games without a win in all competitions, while they face a tough trip to Aston Villa in midweek before next weekend’s crunch battle with 1/3 relegation favourites Burton. It’s almost three months since Sunderland won any game – a 2-1 Carabao Cup win at Carlisle, while their solitary Championship victory was in August.
