Venue

For the fifth successive year, the BMW SA Open takes place at the Glendower Golf Club in the city of Ekurhuleni. At 7,564 yards this par 72 course is long, with four substantial par threes, but with 64 bunkers accuracy off the tee is perhaps even more important than distance. After playing in the 2013 event, Ryder Cup star and captain Paul McGinley described this beautiful parkland course as one of the best he has ever played. Graeme Storm is the defending champion, having beaten 9/4 favourite Rory McIlroy in a play-off last year, while Brandon Stone, Andy Sullivan and Morten Orum Madsen are the other previous winners of this event at this venue.

Favourites

The betting is dominated by two talented South Africans, with Branden Grace leading the way at 13/2 with Betfred and Charl Schwartzel a 15/2 chance with the same firm. Grace has finished 15th and fourth on his two appearances here, while Schwartzel was runner-up on his only previous visit in 2015. Dylan Frittelli and Dean Burmester both won European Tour events in 2017 and they come next in the betting at 18/1 and 25/1 respectively. Jordan Smith, Soren Kjeldsen and George Coetzee are each available at 28/1 with the rest of the field at 40/1 and above.

Tips

JAMES MORRISON enjoyed a late rally in 2017, ending the year with two top 10 finishes in his last three starts, including one at the Joburg Open in December. The Englishman has played at this venue twice, finishing 15th in 2015 and 13th last year, while he has a good recent record in South Africa, finishing sixth or better in his last three events here. He looks a solid each-way pick at stand-out odds of 45/1 available with Bet365.

JASON SCRIVENER is continuing his steady climb up the world rankings, having moved into the world’s top 200 for the first time with his win in New South Wales in November. Two subsequent top 20s have provided a further boost and the Aussie can build on a decent record at Glendower, finishing 11th and 12th on his two previous appearances here. With his confidence high he has a great chance and Stan James are quoting best odds of 55/1.

ERIK VAN ROOYEN is one of the hottest properties in South African golf, with his results over the last six months catapulting him almost 200 places up the world rankings to 141st. The 27-year-old won twice in 2017 and has finished fourth or better on four of his last eight starts, a run that includes a victory in Hainan and second place at the Joburg Open last month. Bet365 are offering the best price of 50/1 which looks worth snapping up.
