Brandon Stone could be an outsider to watch out for at this week’s Open Championship after firing an incredible closing round of 60 to win the Scottish Open by four shots at Gullane on Sunday.
The South African may have missed out on the European Tour’s first ever round of 59, but his course record score left the rest of the field trailing in his wake and he will go to Carnoustie looking to emulate the exploits of Phil Mickelson, who won both the Scottish Open and The Open in 2013. Stone is a best price of 300/1* with BetVictor to win at Carnoustie, although he played down his prospects of back-to-back successes, saying that he expects one of the world’s most difficult links courses to ‘bite’ him.
Eddie Pepperell, who won the Qatar Masters earlier in the year, finished second at Gullane, and is a 150/1* chance with William Hill, while Ryan Fox once again showed his liking for links golf by finishing in a share of sixth place. The New Zealander, who was second at last week’s Irish Open, is at 125/1* with Betfred.
