Breeders Cup 2017 – Day 1 Tips

The Breeders Cup 2017 gets underway at Del Mar tonight, with the action televised live on AtTheRaces.

Juvenile Fillies Turf

First up are the girls in the Juvenile Fillies Turf and, as you’d expect in a turf contest, Europe is well represented here. Despite her slightly unfavourable draw, we think Aiden O’Brien’s second string (on jockey bookings at least), SEPTEMBER, is the one to beat.

She’s been beaten a couple of times already this season by stablemate and likely favourite here, Happily, but this quicker ground could see her reverse that form and the mile trip should really suit her. She was unlucky in running in the Fillies Mile at Newmarket on her latest start.

Best of the home contingent could be SIGNIFICANT FORM.

She won the Grade 3 Miss Grillo at Belmont on her last start, a race trainer Chad Brown won with his three previous winners of this contest. She had a couple of today’s rivals behind her that day and looks a strong stayer, so a fast early pace would play to her strengths.

Pick of the outsiders could be Ultima D.

Unibet and Betfred are both offering 4 places for each-way bets on this race.

Las Vegas Dirt Mile

Next Up is the Dirt Mile, where home favourite ACCELERATE looks the one to beat.

This horse saves his best for Del Mar and has improved recently for the fitting of blinkers. This is his trip too – from four starts over a mile he has finished first twice, second and third.

Another Chad Brown horse, PRACTICAL JOKE, looks a big danger. He just about stays this trip, but is a strong travelling sort who should be suited by the likely end to end gallop here. He should be picking off rivals late on.

Practical Joke (ew)10.05 Del Mar7/1Bet365

Juvenile Turf

There’s no European runner in the Dirt Mile, but the next race is back on the grass and hopes are high that we can take the Juvenile Turf.

Our main contender looks to be MASAR, who will enjoy encountering fast ground again after struggling in the mud in France last time out.

Trainer Charlie Appleby won this race in 2013 his runner here has won over 6f & 7f, so should have enough speed for this sharp track. He has a decent draw in stall 6.

The other one to catch our eye is again trained by our old friend Chad Brown!

VOTING CONTROL was an impressive winner on debut and then was unlucky in running when second on his only other start in the Grade 3 Pilgrim. Had he won that race he would surely have been a much shorter price here and looks good each-way value.

Paddy Power are offering 4 places for each-way bets on this race.

Longines Distaff

The final contest tonight is the Distaff over a mile and a furlong.

The two on our shortlist are Elate and FOREVER UNBRIDLED, with slight preference for the latter. This mare was third in the race last year (one place ahead of Stellar Wind) and seems to have improved this season. She has won both her races this term including a Group 1 on her latest start.
